Black Plastic Fork Tubes Cracked...

Post by ferroknight »

With 7000 miles on the clock, I guess it's time for me to change fork fluid while I install new caps.

Does the oil in the forks really need to be changed out at 7,000 miles? I didn't see anything about that in the manual for either the 6 or 12k services.

Sledge,

The service manual says:
Note: No oil changes required during inspections: unit is
maintenance-free.
If you had it apart for a seal change, it takes 470cc forkoil per leg. The air space above the oil level does mimic an actual spring - - - as I found out when I removed the top forktube nut to change my mildly cracked top dust seals (the part that you see sliding up and down with the forktube).
Since there's no hydraulic damping circuit in them, a 5 or 10 weight synthetic oil should be fine for friction free movement.

EDIT: I've E-Mailed you a short note and the page from the service manual on fork dissassembly/assembly.
