Doncha love previous owners... AKA fitting a screen woes

Post by scouse »

So here in the UK if you sign up to do the BMW sponsored Off Road Skills course you get some World of BMW vouchers - so using mine and my partners I managed to order a new Speedster screen for the 2004 Yeller Jacket - aka the Banana Bike , with a small top up - Bonus!

Picked it up Saturday afternoon, went out Sunday morning to wash the bike , fit the new screen over the nicely polished clocks and spend the day riding... should only take a few minutes to fit and all day of blatting around the sunny Peak District with a pocket full of various sized washers to adjust...or so I thought.

Left hand bolt came out , bracket went on loosely - funny though that the bolt was aftermarket stainless... hmmm... closer inspection revealed that there might have been a screen on this with a previous owner, as the marks I made loosening the blanking bolt lined up with touched up scratches on the headlight bracket.

Round to the right hand side... sonofabitch who tighetend this one , Mighty Joe Young??? I had to drop the fork tube out of the way to get leverage, It came loose, felt tight, came loose... arsebiscuits! As it fell out so did most of the thread! dingle previous owner strikes again! The bolt butcher of Blackpool is how I think of the hamfisted twatwaffle. The poor bike is slowly being given the TLC is deserves, and is responding by burning and leaking less oil and less parts falling off since it's purchase as an emergency ride in September... was a buy then sell on bike but it's maybe found it's forever home...

Ok now down to the nitty gritty, it looks like I will either need to run an M8 x1.25 ( already run thread gauges over it :) ) tap on it or fit a thread insert. Either way I will need to take the top yoke off. Is this possible with out disconnecting everything ?

Depends how far you want to move the yoke from the bike.....ignition switch is permanently fixed with tamper proof bolts...it's a drill 'em out job if you want to remove it. There will be a block connector under the tank....that means disturbing the quick release fuel connectors. Happy days!

Just enough to get a tap or a drill and tap in... got a set of V-coil inserts that I have used before on other bikes, just need the clearance of about 6 inches diameter to get in there - and if V-coil are good enough for Rolls Royce they are good enough for a Bargin Basement Beemer :D

Not an issue in the UK. I've had the tank off mine every 12000 miles (and often in between) over 104,000 miles (or more ) and I'm still on the originals. :)
