Upgrade To SignalMinder

Post by HiOSilver »

A few months ago I posted a message about the delay in triggering the turn signalsthat I'm experiencing since I installed a SignalMinder from KisanTech. I have to very deliberately press and momentarily hold the turn signal button for the turn signal to come on. When I've needed to maneuver quickly I've found that the turn signals have not 'engaged' even though the button was pressed. The response I got here from several folks was that 'it's normal for the SignalMinder' and 'you'll get used to it'.

:x Well, I haven't gotten used to it, and had just about decided to remove the SignalMinder (which I really like a lot - other than this problem) before it gets me killed. I sent an email to Kisan to let them know about the problem and I got an interesting querey back: "Is the SignalMinder in an aluminum case or a black plastic case?". When I told them it was the black plastic case, they informed me that this was an older model and the new model would solve the problem.

Based on the response to my original message some months ago, it seems that there are others out there that have the same problem so I thought I'd post this. I've ordered the replacement which should arrive by weeks end, and I'll post the results of the upgrade.

BTW, I had saved about 25% by purchasing the SignalMinder on eBay earlier this year and it even came in the factory packaging! Ah, well, another lesson learned - don't scrimp on safety related items!!!

Chris -

I have the "newer" SM in the silver case and I must admit that I do have to be a bit more deliberate on the switchgear but it is an adjustment I found very easy to make. I was nearly killed a couple of times before I had the self-cancelling feature as cars turned right in front of me because they assumed that, since my signal was on, I was going to turn!

Good luck with the new unit. I think TADT, so you may want to try to modify your switchgear handling before throwing in the towel.

Ride safe!

Owen,
Last night the package from Kisan arrived with the new SM-5 SignalMinder.:D It only took a few minutes to install (and this time I added the brake light connection). The difference is *HUGE*.:smt041 I rode 45 miles through city traffic today and probably used it 20+ times. With the new unit, all it takes is fully depressing the switch - not the press and hold that was required with the outdated one. In addition, the passing or lane change feature is very nice! :smt023

Can you run just front running lights with the new one or is the only option front and rear at the same time?

Signal Minder

I have the silver case and never noticed the problem. No change from before installation until after installation. I connected the brake feature, but no running lights. Admittedly, I am not a signal freak. I use it in group riding as a courtesy and on an "as needed" basis at other times. I love the thing. No longer are there those times when I ride long past a turn with the signal flashing away because I neglected to cancel the signal and did not notice the dash light flashing. I have it set to auto-cancel after 30 seconds.

Signal Minder

HiOSilver--

With the new version of the signal minder, and maybe the original, the turn indicators will flash momentarily if you press and hold the paddle for a second or two. Very nifty. Also, you can set the control so that the turn signal indicators become running lights, and you can choose different levels of brightness for the running lights.

Signal Minder

HiOSilver,

Did you have to remove the gas tank to install the SignalMinder?

I'm not very handy, so any tips are welcomed.

Did you buy the SM-5 or SM-6?
A little nonsense now and then is cherished by the wisest men.

Here is the manual from their site.

I'll be installing mine this weekend. I will play with the running lights and see if I like them.
