R1200R valve adjustment

I had a 2002 R1150R and the valve adjustment was a snap. Now I have a R1200r and I'm about to attempt the adjustment. My question is, is the arrow on the cam chains still visible to let you know if it is on TDC or do you have to take take the belt cover off the front of the engine?

Any help would be much appreciated.

The arrow is still visible, as is the lump (180 degrees from the arrow) that triggers the camshaft position sensor. Both are on the right side camshaft (left cylinder has a fan like oil seperator for the crankcase ventilation).

There are some good writeups on doing the valve adjust, and rocker arm endplay adjustment in the DIY forum on the BMW-MOA hexhead subforum.

I've gotten in the habit of ignoring the markings, since I didn't like getting up and walking around to see them from the left side of the engine.

Instead I just gently place a long, skinny screwdriver through the spark plug hole and keep it against the piston as I rotate the engine with the rear wheel. To me it's easier to see exactly where Top Dead Center occurs.

I don't know if this is BMW-approved standard operating procedure, but the engine runs smooth when I'm done, and I'm smiling.

Any concern about any maintenance on the R1200 based bikes can be alleviated by purchasing one of Jim VonBaden's R1200 maintenance DVDs. They are very detailed and really cover a lot. Well worth their money.

Sounds like a legitimate idea. Personally, I'd be more comfortable using something soft that can't chip easily, say, a plastic straw.
