Post by rpd1 »

Can anyone point me to some directions for removing the front wheel?
I just changed the rear tire but the front is giving me a problem.
thanks,

Take the calipers off, remove the 4 lug nuts, whalla!! Done. Although I did have a bit of trouble getting the calipers back on the wheel, a bit of fanagaling and swearing, and it was back on
See, I told you guys, half the time I dont know what I'm talking about.

Thanks Johnny. I got the rear wheel off, no problem. Took about a 1/2 hour to change the tire from start to finish. Then I started on the front. Took the calipers off, loosened the right pinch bolt, took out the left side axle bolt and then went to loosen the left pinch bolt and it is stripped. Kind of brought my project to a halt for the evening. While I was sitting there staring at it I realized that I'm not sure how to remove the axle. Left to right or right to left? BFH? LFH? Block of wood? Screw driver? I don't know.

Thanks,
Ryan

You're almost home (except the stripped bolt).

Get both pinch bolts loose. Stick a screwdriver in the holes on the Right hand side of axle...and twist and pull.

Notice: Speedometer drive unit (on left) and spacer(on right)

A very light greasing of the axle will keep it easy to remove next time.

edit-Al beat me...Look at picture above. :D

Thanks for the tips.
Yeah, the stripped bolt is a bit of an obstacle at this point. I want to wait and see if I can get a replacement at the shop tomorrow before I try to get it out. Plan on trying my luck with an ez out. Any other suggestions?

Anything will work fine. It isn't critical. Just a light coating of whatever you have just so you can slide it off in the future.

When in doubt, apply heat. You never know when Locktite was used on a bolt. Also, heating seems to expand the metal around the bolt enough to loosen it, even without Locktite.

Thanks everyone.

Got the bolt out with a bolt remover. Sears had them on sale for $9.99 for a set. There is just enough of the bolt head sticking out to get a bite on. Tapped it on with a hammer and it turned right out. Worked great.

The front tire was harder to put on than the rear. It was a little easier the second time, after I took it off to turn it around.

Thanks,
Ryan

Yep, lesson learned. I bet it doesn't happen again.
