My 2000 R did the same thing and I found a wire at the stearing head that was streched. It was broke inside but looked fine outside. Also found that the positive line from the battery was the same way. If I turned the handlebars one way the wire pulled apart and the bike would not start.

For what its worth, BMW does not make their own oil or filters. All brands of filters can be used and do not void the warrenty.
