St Kilda brown men.

St Kilda beach is a local Melbourne city beach..and a group of sun worshipers hang out there every day..all year round..so they are brown as berries.

I've been going down to this beach almost everyday for the past couple of months now and I have become good friends with these guys.

I normally see them with my surfboard while stand up paddling..today I surprised them with a visit on my bike.

These guys are great..all between 70-80yrs old..and real nice guys..here is Brian,Martin,Louie,Tony and Harry.




I had some ice cold water that was still half frozen...mmmm...better than coke'a'cola on a hot day like this.



Btw...have I said how hot it's been.. ..ain't summer great...I stopped for an ice cream on my way home.

Your pictures normally remind me of SoCal, but today its pure south Florida, with the wizened greyhairs out cooking on the hot beaches. Great way to spend retirement. Probably feels good to get heat in those old joints.

I agree with Rob, that picture could have been taken in Florida! It looks like that really enjoy your friendship and your bike, DJ.
Why does that one guy with the beard and hat always have one hand on your bike? It looks like he is trying to claim it.

Thanks guys....Gypsy..I'm not sure why Brian is reaching or holding my rack like that..maybe he thought it might fall and he was going to catch it.

btw..he's in his 80's...a brilliant artist..he normally has his sketch pad under his arm..I should have take a few pics of his drawings and sketches and post them for you to see.

Just kidding about the perving..I'm sure it happens a little..we can't help it because we're not gay..(not that there's anything wrong with that.. ..)..they talk about everything..they're very entertaining to listen to.

They know where all the little fairy penguins are hiding nearby and they often show the tourists where they are..they pickup any litter and rubbish in the area..they take any bad starfish that they find out of the water to die..and explain to everyone who asks what harm they are doing and that they come in on the ships from Japan and that each one gives birth to 20 million babies..so they can take over and kill off the local starfishes.

It's interesting stuff..they have books with pictures to prove what they say is correct...even I pull out a few (starfish) each day that I'm there.

Sunbeemer...yes I'm sure these a lot of guys like that at beaches everywhere...and about that seat..you have good eyes..it is the tall comfort rear seat.

I have not had it long and have not given it a good test yet..it sits flush with the rear rack..there is normally a slight drop to the seat and my seat bag sits half on the rack and half on the seat..so it's better there..It also is raised more and stops me sliding back..it feels good to push against.

I'll let you know once I've given it a good test..maybe next weekend..(re the pillion test).I'm going down to Phillip Island for the World Super bike races..it's about two hours each way..I've been told it's better on the few short times that I have used it.

It is cold here, 40's for highs. Everyone but the Skiers are sick to death of this long winter in the Northwest. Our 'riding season' still another 30 days away but breaks in the cold/rain torture are now within sight.

Thanks for the pictures. It was nice to look at them and just bask in the memories of what hot weather feels like. Nice shot of your bike...It's just such a pretty/sexy bike. HOT.

I get a bunch of WWII vets in here at work. I love thier stories and perspectives. Wisdom. Thanks for reminding us the value of these sentinals of your beach.

Carol...you're right about old people and their wisdom..and their perspective on things.

I took my camera today..hoping to catch Brian and take some pics of his drawings.. when I got to where the guys hang out Brian wasn't there today (the others were there)...so maybe another day I'll get those pics.

While I had my camera with me I did take some pics for those who may be interested...I was just out paddling around the marina at St Kilda.

We have a lot of jellie fish around lately..and big ones..some about a foot across and two feet long...btw..I nearly fell in taking this pic..



This is an average sized one..I take them out and put them in the sun to die..only to find later that tourists have thrown them back in...



I did see a few penguins but none would come out in the open so I could get a good pic.

I really, REALLY, enjoyed those pictures. You do know what a lucky man you are, right? You live in this great place with cool things to see and do. And wonderful, rich local personalities to add to the whole experience. You obviously appreciate these things as well.

The Jelly fish is really interesting. The penguins' cute. What kind of penguins are they? I have heard there are like 15 different kinds of penguins.... Thanks for the education as well, When you put the starfish population into perspective...well, I find myself wanting to go pull them out and let them dry like pancakes in the sun as well. Maybe even squish a few.

A thought occured to me....

You must be either a really good paddler or have a waterproof camera.

and by the way....are those skull and cross bones on your crocks?

I caught up with Brian the other day and he had one of his sketch pads with him so I took a few pics of some of his drawings.

These drawings are just a few nature things in the local area...first the cover with eucalyptus gum nuts and leaves and then a few other native plants.





A couple of small (fairy) penguins.



Some local native starfish and stuff..



Here he is...gold nipple ring and all..notice his arm tattoo is like his drawings.

The symbol on his chest is his birth date..in some other lingo..He did explain it to me but I forgot how it goes.

He's pretty fit for someone is his 80's

Jeff the correct term in Little Penguin..but they get called Fairy Penguins because they only grow to about a foot tall.

The correct name is Eudyptula minor ...I think.. ..down at Phillip Island (about an hour south) they have tourist shows were you pay to have a seat on a type of grandstand and once the sun goes down in the evening they put big lights on and light up the whole beach and you can watch dozens and sometimes hundreds of little penguins all coming out of the water up the beach to their burrows in the nearby sand hills....it's a big show.

If ever you are in Melbourne it's something not to be missed.
