well hello everyone. I purchased a brand new 2004 r1150r back in aug 06 and have been lurking around ever since. I'm planning a trip and want to buy a shield, I was looking at bmw's sport shield and would like to hear any opinions I'm 5'7''. I will be going nonstop for about a 1000 miles and would like to take some of the wind off my chest any help please.

Welcome BITS!
I'm sure there will be plenty of suggestions about shields, so here's mine .02¢.
Bought the bike, then bought a sport shield a week later.
Nice to look at with no shield, but for me it was too much pressure in the chest for any kind of distance riding, just like you say.
The sport shield helps quite a bit, keeping the main blast of wind off the chest ( I'm 6' ) . I liked the sport shield.
Then I bought a BMW touring shield for a longer trip, wanting more protection from the elements.
I really like the touring shield, and haven't taken it off since, 12,000 miles later. Granted it is louder, putting the wind right on the face-shield for me, but I love the protection and the curved looks. I always ride with isolating headphones or earplugs anyway, so the noise doesn't matter to me.
Quite a few people swear by the sport with Laminar Lip combo, but I haven't tried it, though I should.
One piece of advise though, no matter what shield you get, when you install it use a few drops of blue lock-tite for the mounts. It will save you from a headache later.
If you search around, there's plenty of discussion about shields.
Good Luck!

Welcome
I'm 5'7" and have the BMW touring shield on mine along with handguards and a Bill Mayer seat. The seat is just a bit higher than the stock low seat.
I find this to be a very comfortable setup for touring.
I have tried the Sport screen and also have a Givi A750 for summer, around town riding.
The touring setup is what I'm happy with on long hauls.

Welcome aboard BITS! Congrats on your 2004 R,
I also got a 2004 last year and it came with the sport shield. Even though it doesn't look like much, as ChiTown said, it will keep the wind off your chest.
I am looking at getting something a little taller for the cooler Spring and Fall weather here in IL this season.
A couple companies to Check out:
Cee Baileys direct:

MRA Vario screens from Twisted Throttle:

and the GIVI, also from Twisted Throttle:

I am currenly leaning towards the MRA because it's mid-size and has the adjustable laminar lip built in. I'm sure other's will chime, there is more than a wealth of info on this board.

I have one more option.
I'm 6'4" and like to keep the naked bike look but also like to keep the wind off my chest.
I use this little 650GS screen that mounts off the Speedster/fly screen mounts.
It's just big enough to protect the instruments from bugs and stone chips and another bonus is that it is very quiet with no buffeting.

DJ - what motorcycle?
I use the speedster setup and find it quieter than the sport shield I usually put on for winter. Although this winter, I have just toughed it out and not made the switch!
Oh, and , BITS welcome to the asylum!
