Anyone replaced a laptop screen before?

Post by GypsyRR »

My 17" Apple PowerBook G4 has a 6 inch crack down the center of the screen. It does not hinder the use of the laptop so far (I'm using it now), but I'm wondering how long it will last like this.

I've checked online about replacing the screen and it seems that I could buy a new laptop for the price Apple wants to replace it. I've looked at PB iFIXIT for a diy kit and even that will run between $600-$900 and from what I've read it is not easy to replace them.

Does anyone have experience with this? Does it have to be replaced or can I limp along with a cracked screen for another year? And if you've replaced one, any tips on doing it? Any idea where a alternate replacement which would be cheaper could be found?

What I would do is :

1st -- insure you can use the DVI to external monitor cable to run the laptop when the LCD finally fails.

2nd -- backup the data and apps to an external drive.

3rd -- call these guys (they are in Houston) http://www.screentekinc.com

I have done it on a Dell Inspiron that I had a couple of years ago but I wouldn't even know where to start with the Mac Book that I have bow.
Unfortunately every laptoop is different, good luck.
