Drive Line Lash feels harsher lately - Hmmmm.....

Post by daslimpet »

Here is a question for the venerable mechanics on the board.

When I originally purchased my beautiful Piedemont Red (torquiest color) roadster I was impressed by how the drive line, while having a certain amount of freeplay lash to it, seemed fairly well "damped" when transitioning between accelleration and engine braking. That is to say I could feel a gentle bump when the slack in the driveline came to an end.

28 thousand miles later, the 'bump' feeling is more like a 'smack' or a 'clank' when transitioning from engine braking to engine accelerating or vice verse - as though the rubber damping in the drive shaft is no longer damping. It feels more like my old virago shaft at this point.

Could it be I've worn the rubber or urethane or whatever damping material used in the shaft over time due to too many ham fists on the throttle?

Possible U-Joints near the end of their service life?

Worn splines?

Much appreciation for any wisdom or advice you can bestow to the benefitof myself or any others with a similar quandry.

As you know "they all do that sir" to a certain extent - some more than others.

I understand and symapthise with your dilema.............very frustrating. Your question will prompt a whole host of replies based on people's personal experiences. You have to take it to a dealer (sorry) for them to have a listen.
