Engine pinging
I know this has been covered before, but, despite everything, the pinging persists. My R has about 14K mi, TBS performed, valves adjusted, new plugs, always use premium fuel, usually Chevron, if not, then Shell. It is not babied or ebused, I don't lug it. But, under hard throttle, it pings like crazy, not all of the time, but most of the time. I can usually make it ping at will. Any ideas? Otherwise, it runs perfect. Thanks

I have tried this as well, but still pings. I should note also that it does it whether it is hot or cold.Rootin55 wrote:My 02 R would ping after I got about 9K on her. Hot in Houston too. I used the sea foam as well and made it a habit to hit the rev limiter a time or 2 towards the end of each ride.

So, didn't you try the cam chain tensioner swap out? It didn't fix the pinging? Did it help with anything? I'm on the dry side, so we have a good comparison.ErikU wrote:My bike pings the same way, and it's not due to hot weather. Octane boost totally cures the problem, but what a pain to put that in every time. I'd love to hear of a solution.

Yes, I did the cam chain tensioner,.. but I don't think it has anything at all to do with pinging.
The cam chain tensioner helps a whole lost to quite down the top end.. especially during start up and hard stops. Doesn't sound or behave at all like engine pinging. The tensioner upgrade was great and easy too. I used the directions from the web but did NOT need to remove anything. I simply used a short socket extension and U joint. No more bad engine sounds. I have a thread here about it and on ADV rider.
The pinging is your typical slight loss of power and tink type sound from the engine when under high load... like wide open throttle. The only thing that has worked for me is octane boost.

Beemer-biker,
The following thread seems a bit surprising to me, but it might be worth a shot:

If you have a noisy idle when the engine gets hot, I strongly recommend this $50 upgrade.
