wind shield comparisons

Post by ken k »

Hi fellow beaksters,

I have a Cee Bailey touring shield and was wondering if anyone knows how this compares to the BMW touring shield?

Also does anyone have experinece with the Laminar Lips? I guess they do not have one for the Cee Bailey only the BMW shields.

I would be interested in knowing how a BMW sport shield with a Lamiar Lip compares to the Touring shield sans lip.

just considering some options.

That's so funny to see this thread this morning, as I was almost ready to create this same thread last night before my computer died!

Anyway, I'm looking at the BMW Windshields for my '02 R1150R. I want two screens, one for winter (BMW Touring) and one for summer (either BMW Speedster or BMW Sport). I'm wondering if anyone with real-world experience on the Roadster has any feelings about these, especially between the Speedster and Sport Windshields (I'm so confused!).

Thanks!

One more thing, I see some nice shields by Ztechnik, anyone know about these and how to purchase them?

I have tried them all and found the small fly/speedster screen was not quite what I was looking for. I ended up with the sport screen with the laminar lip and aeroflow tank wings and for me it is just right. I tried the Cee Bailey touring screen and liked it but living in Florida it was a little too much protection even in the winter. The good part about the sport and touring screens is they both use the same mounting brackets so they are really easy to switch back and forth.

I'm running a BMW sport shield with a Saeng lip. It's perfect for me with no helmet buffet. It does a great job taking the air off my chest and allowing comfortable highway cruising. It's really all about height. I'm 6'2" and it's right on the money. There are many threads on this subject so do a search. By talking to other riders I got it right the first time!

I had the BMW touring screen and found it flexed too much, causing a buffeting feeling. The sport screen with laminar lip has proven to be a very good do-it-all shield for these warmer southern climes. It's good down to about 40 degrees Fahrenheit if you layer properly and have the heater grips. Yet allows plenty of clean air flow in warmer times.

My understanding is that the Cee Bailey's screens fit on the BMW mounts if you'd like to easily swicth between screens as the weather changes.

windshield

Post by aldendad »

I have a aeroflow sport windshield, I wanted the touring model (I have it on my 2000 r110r) but there was a mounting problem with the replacement bolt under the handelbar. I added to that a laminar lip and as a result have very little buffering on my helmet.

with the fly/speedster screen mounting brackets, the MRA VarioTouringScreen Windshield for BMW R1150R is a consideration. Bolts right up to the existng mounts.

It has a 7 position spoiler that directs the air to your liking based on your height and preference for clean or deflected air. It looks good on the roadster - fits the lines and is the right scale for a naked bike. Twisted Throttle has them, although mine was back ordered. 8)

I've been considering the MRA Vario. It looks like a great solution.

I have the BMW sport screen, but am looking for the laminar lip for it--where can I get one?

Thanks!

I have the sports shield only and need everything else to mount it to my RR. Do any of have both the Sports and Touring shield with both mounting kits who would sell me one set of complete mounts for the Sportshield? Thanks.....

For those of you with the "Sports", or "Bubble" shield with the Laminar Lip, is it practical to think that I could use the shield with the Lip in the cooler months, and remove the Lip in the the warmer months? Would any drilled holes pose a problem? Keep in mind I ride in a warm climate (Southern California), winter temps are only going to be in the high 30 degree (F) area on the coolest riding mornings.

Thanks!

I tried every BMW shield and a number of different combinations. Here are my thoughts:

-If you are looking to use anything other than the speedster screen, you should seriously look at using the Aeroflow tank wings. There is a lot of turbulent air coming under the handlebars over the oil coolers. The tank wings take care of this. IMHO, these are a must have item. All the screens I tried sucked hard without the tank wings.

-Speedster screen doesn't do much more than protect the instruments. Good for that "naked" feel.

-Sport screen, with tank wings gave decent protection on center mass

-Sport screen. with tank wings and laminar lip. Very good setup. smooth air, good protection. The only reason I don't have this setup is the windy condition on Midwestern interstates and the insane amount of buffeting when anywhere near a semi. This is about riding environment more than anything.

-Aeroflow tall touring shield and tank wings. This provides Gold wing levels of protection. I can ride at 90mph across three Midwest states without needing to put my visor down. I don't get soaked when it rains, and I can ride 500 miles @ highway speeds in 20 degree weather (of course gerbings help). Of course in the summer, there's little airflow, but that's what mesh gear and cooling vests are for. 8)

You do not drill holes to attach the Laminar Lip. You secure it with something made by 3M called Dual Lock. It is similar to really big, heavy duty Velcro, but not exactly. When you remove the lip, you will have two quarter-sized circles on each side of your wind screen. It is not noticable.

Optimus Prime,
You got that tall Aeroflow touring shield mounted now? Can you post some picts? I've seen the shield on their web site and in the ads they run in BMW ON, but I'd still like to see some picts of the entire bike with that shield.
