PORTLAND OREGON TO ARIZONA ...THIS MONTH

Post by Just-Beeming »

We are planning a trip from Portland Oregon area to Phoenix on the 13th of APRIL. Our current plan is to travel western Nevda from Reno to Vegas then on to Phoenix. ....I would love to hear others opinions on this or other routes that look most favorable during this time of year.

Any experiences with weather, wind, snow etc. along this route?

We hope to go east in Oregon over the pass where we have webcam resources then south and east to Susanville CA...then proceed through Reno then south to Vegas and on to Phoenix.

We are allowing three days riding for this trip.

Your thoughts, opinons.....

Hello from Arizona
We are currently in Surprise Arizona. The almost three day ride here was really an experience. We managed two 500+ mile days, and 300 the third. It took careful planning and calculating the weather right up to the last minute before departure at 8 oclock Thursday morning.
The ride over the Willamette Pass in Oregon was cold but brief..then the weather perked up as we pressed south to Lakeview Oregon and toward Alturas California....I saw at least 700 deer off to the sides of the road in the fields in small pockets of 50-70 deer. None on the road happily.

Nevada was having thundershowers and constant gusts of wind for the 2nd day of the journey but again luck was on our side and only got wet two or three times but never drenched. The wind however was something to contend with. Some very head buffeting gusts. My husband on his GS seemed to have more trouble than myself on the R. He is Tall and I believe he acts as a sail. Plus my low center of balance is to my advanatage in the wind.

We crossed over Hoover Dam and that was really awesome. Lots of tourists already this early in the season. We snapped a few pictures then moved on. We had a lot of semi's to deal with in Northern Arizona but left them behind on Hwy 93. We finally hit the heat that we were seeking at Wickenburg Arizona...this rider and her partner could not peel out of our heavy gear fast enough.

LOTS of BIKES down here! Mostly cruisers but some cafe racers and I saw and RT this morning... the rider was wearing shorts and a baseball cap. Quite a difference from our Oregon riders in thier warm gear and crash hats.

Now we are spending 4 days here basking in the sun and spending time with family and friends. We will start the retun trip Thursday and think we will cross Death Valley and then proceed west to Nappa Valley in California then up the coast Hwy 101 back to Oregon. Weather permitting.

I look forwad to the trip home. This is my first road trip in my 13+ years of riding...it has just whetted my appetite! I am looking forward to a nice summer with many more rides to come.
