Jesse Bags
Okay, many may hate the look, others hate the price (incl. me) but, who out there has experience with Jesses on an 'R'? I've only seen one on any of the forums. Issues w/clearance? Also, has anyone fit Touratech's to an R? Thanks for your quality feedback.
Jesses on an R1150R
I have them on my R1150R which I gave to my son.

Caribou Cases
Perhaps you're just looking for space, but these are a neat enough design to be worth looking into, The cases are Pelican 1520's. Seriously waterproof and probably bulletproof. At $675 they're about half the price of the Jessie's aren't they ? About the same as the system cases.

I'd be a little suspicious about a website that advertises pelican cases for motorcycles, but doesn't show you how they are mounted.
BTW the site shows them only for GS not R1150R.
I did extensive research on this when I was considering adding a pelican case as a rear box for my R1150R, and here's what I found:
A couple of points to condsider
1) Jessee Bags cost $1100 new, and $850 if you buy one of their factory flawed sets. A factory flaw is a ding or a scratch only. The cases come in colors, black, silver, whatever. They are interchangeable to a GS bike, if you ever changed up, you just need a new bracket system @$200 or less.
2) 1520 pelican cases weigh 12lb each, which does not include any mounting. The dimensions are 18" x 12.875" x 6.75". That means the case is less than 7 inches deep, and about 1 foot wide??? Thats narrower and thinner than a tent, sleeping bag or alot of other things you might like to put in a saddlebag. An individual 1520 pelican case costs about $130. Caribou mounts must be really special=expensive.
3) Although pelican cases are warrantied for life, according to pelican,I beleive warranty extends to cases bought from their certified dealers only.
4) The warranty is void if you drill into the case or modify it in any way. Thus for mounting to a bike, you would void the lifetime waranty on the cases. Not much point in that.
Just my opinion. After so much research...I'm convinced Jesse is the way to go.

BTW: I beleive if you add Jesse Bags, you have to remove BMW system case rails from the bike. No problem. But then how do you mount a Jesse rear case, or a luggage rack, or anything to the R1150R with no system case rails?
I'd like to keep my custom cargo rack, but if I take off the rails, there's nothing to mount it to....
now what?

Charlie,
If you click on the link called "product info" under the title, it has a series of photos showing the mounting system. The issue I have with the system is that he's mounted the bags too far outboard to clear the raised exaust. Lower it and move the bags in 2 or 3 inches. And, for the sake of durability it looks like a steel bridge frame when the bags are removed.
The Caribou guy is playing to the GS crowd though, not really to us RR guys. The frame on an GS is the same as the RR I think. I do like the idea of a top mounted 1520. I've seen a 1520 mounted on an RT as a computer case and it looked decent. Us photographers will appreciate the fitted photo bag Pelican sells for the 1520. I went out and looked at my system cases and decided in spite of the odd interior shape they look and work very well. You do have to work around the structure inside.
As far as the depth of the Pelicans, most people would like the regular shape, and Pelican, as you know does make a larger box then the 1520. Remember the original poster was looking at Touratech boxes which are pretty huge. I took a box about 6" deep to UPS in my side case yesterday, but actually I use the bungie net for big things. For camping I use the Helen2Wheels system. I guess my tent would fit in the side cases, but I put all that on top.
All these systems make you commit to their mounting system, and few if any allow you to keep the system case mounts.

I have Jesse's on my R1150R and was not satisfied with the cornering clearance until I installed a GS suspension on it. The sound of the $1,000 bags grinding themselves away against the pavement is memorable. Not trying to restart that thread (please!) but just some information for you to digest. I had Pelican cases on my KLR and they were quite functional. There are larger cases than the 1520 that will work. I installed the left one lid first and put limiting straps on it so that it would be easier to pack and retrieve items from. The assymetrical setup would affect the aesthetic sensitivities of some. Looking at the Caribou mounts on the GS, I think it would suffer from the same cornering clearance issues as the Jesse's.

I do not have a rear rack yet. I have the solo seat with rear cover pan and I plan to fabricate a custom rack out of aluminum to span between the Jesse's and from the back of the solo seat to the end of the tail section. It will be hinged to flip backwards for access under the seat. The rack will have a driver's backrest on the front of it and will have a quick detachable Summit Racing 5-gallon fuel cell. Hopefully this won't start a thread about how all that interferes with the "lines" of the bike or why anyone needs that much gas or needs to carry that much stuff. - Lee
I have Jesse cases on my R1150R and they have worked out great. To the best of my knowledge, you can't mount any stock top case rack with the Jesse cases/mounts in place. I guess you could try to have a top case rack specially fabricated but that would be expensive (or at least time-consuming, provided you were able to do the work yourself).
The Jesse cases are definitely the first things to scrape in corners. It happens down low on the cases so you can't really see the damage unless you kneel down next to the bike. I hang off when I think the case is likely to scrape, so it's not usually a problem. To me, the low clearance is worth it, because I like having all the storage space.

Thanks for your helpful suggestions and feedback. I am still kicking around which bags to install on my new R. I'm pretty 'space spoiled' from having Touratechs on my F650. If any of you have photos of your Jesse R setup please post them on email them to me. The pix on the Jesses site doesn't tell me much.
