Bungee Buddy?

Post by houndog »

Does anyone have these installed on their system caseshttp://www.sierrabmw.bigstep.com/item.j ... RID=649852. If so could you show some pics? I have some and I don't want to drill into my cases and then discover that I placed them in unuseable locations.

Thanks for the help,
Tommy

I have some on my system cases, and will try to post a picture later. I put 2 on each case, and then strap luggage across the back seat.

I put them here. You don't want to drill thru the part I've marked with a white "X". Also use some Shoe Goo to seal the hole around the bolt/washer. Find ShoeGoo at Wal-Mart.

Thanks Boxer. :) I had the thought that was where I was gonna put it. I am planning for my first light unsupported motorcycle solo adventure and part of that is gettin all of that "light" equipment (tent, sleeping bag, cooler, margareta machine, you know the usual) strapped to the bike. I have never been really good at packing. So I am in the process of getting everything ready. I have a project at work that is supposed to be done in the next month or so and as soon as it is gone I am too. I am just gonna pack and go ( I think East), with no firm destinatinon for about a week. It's the only thought keeping me sane.
Thanks for the help.

Well, if you get this far over (north Georgia) give me a shout and maybe I can show you some nice roads around here. PM me for a phone number if you're interested.

bungee buddies

Post by wncbmw »

They call them bungee buddies, but use them with something better than bungees for packing! Rokstraps rock! And outdoor stores can supply you with nylon webbing and buckles also. Bungees stretch (doh!) and can let your load loose on bumpy roads.

Some bungee alternatives and other tiedown options are here:

a warning

Post by GJBushman »

Mine are also placed as in the pictures. I have been warned by some experienced BMW riders that too much force in this area from bungees or straps/webbing will pull up on the cases and could pull them off the mounts. I had one experience where this occurred. The only thing keeping the case on the bike was the bungees. It was dangling from the two bungees. I use them with caution now.

Mine also are placed as in the pictures, and GJBushman makes an excellent point. Den

Before you use the bungie buddys take a look at
helen2wheels.com
Been using it for years, awesome stuff. Never leaks, always stays on, and lasts forever. NO BUNGIES, I hate bungies.

Mine are placed like Boxer's.

I use Helen2wheels bags, and they have been great.

Cyclerob drilled some holes so he could pin the lower mount of the bag to it's perch.

H2W Straps

Post by Airman »

I use the Helen 2 Wheels straps on mine. The two straps go through the loops on her bags and then secures to the luggage mounts. No pressure on the bags then. If I decide to mount the sleeping bags on the cases during two up camping I will probably use the bungie buddies, but that won't exert any pressure on the mounts. I guess you could put a lot of stress on the latch if you used them to secure the load across the seat.

Has anyone place them on the lids ? Would that be a problem ?

Ditto with the locations. I also used large stainless mudguard washers on the inside as reinforcing plates to distribute the load and fitted some to the front of my top case for extra tie down points.

A couple of other points though. I drilled my holes slightly undersize so that I had to screw the buddies through the plastic case. 100% waterproof without sealant.

I also (15,000 km back) replaced the plastic bungee buddies with similar stainless eye bolts (M8). These have a slightly larger ring so that I can now put two (or even three) bungee straps through the eye. The bungee buddy was just too small for the strap hooks that I was using and only fitted one. Allows more straps to be used.

Agree with the comments about too much 'up' pull on the cases. I only strap stuff down lightly, and also use other parts of the bike (the rail loops and top case hooks) to share the load.

I run bungees from the frame loop that holds the passenger pegs, across the top diagonally, and hook the other end into the rear slots in the case rack -- there's room there for a bungee hook even with the cases mounted. I'm a little worried about rubbing through the paint on the frame loop with the bungee hooks, but so far, after maybe 20K miles of touring, I've seen no wear. I use bungees with plastic-coated hooks.
