Handgurds on 1150R. Not your normal question I promise

Post by hotzuk »

Okay, I am not going to ask do hand guards from the 1150 bikes fit on the beloved R1150R. I have them on mine with very little added effort to get them on the bike.

I would like to add spoilers to my hand guards. From what I can see, BMW does not offer these with the 1150GS hand guards. That limits me to Touratech or Acerbis. Has anyone mounted hand guards from either of those two companies? What about the spoiler? Thanks for any info!

Spoilers

Post by Simon D »

DJ, if you look at the photos in your "Long Way Round" book you'll see the 'spoilers'on the 1150GS handguards. Marked with the "Touratech" logo. The standard handguards are rather small to provide much in the way of wind/weather protection (much smaller than the old 1100GS ones or the Triumph Tiger ones I had on my "Sprint").
I am assuming the "Touratech" ones work pretty well as every time I get round to ordering a set they are always 'sold out'
I too would be interested to hear if they are any good or not, someone must know - they sell shedloads of 'em!

I use 'em.

They work better at keeping your hands dry, then they do at keeping them warm. Even though they make a difference on cold mornings, a liitle cold air still travels over the top of the spoiler and onto the back of your hands.

Overall, they're keepers, and the "Touratech" letters just peel right off.

Nope. No pictures.

Try re-positioning them rather than buy more bits

The handguards on the GSA are angled-down quite a-lot .... so you get more air flowing over the top - hence the extenders from Touratech etc.

The do look the biz tho' .. and is something I'm going to get round to on my 1150GSA.

I put the GS handguards on my 1150R last year ... and there a lot warmer with not nearly as much airflowing over the top .... as I've angle them more 'up' than 'down'.

Thanks for the feedback

Thanks for all the feedback guys. ASQ, did you ever run the GS hand guards and then switch to the Touratechs. If you don't mind, how much did the Touratechs set you back. Also, how did you find the installation process for the Touratechs

handguards

I installed the GS guards two years ago and love 'em. Keep them on all year round and have never had any problems or issues. Lifesaver in the winter.

You can make them fairly easily. I have made them for Acerbis Rally and Rally Pro, Classic F650 BMW and new F650 BMW handguards. The latter are very similar to the 1150GS guards I have on my R. I'll make some for the R this winter too.

I use 1/32" ABS sheet. I think a 4x8 sheet was ~$16. I just rolled it up and carried it home on the bike. You can cut the plastic with tin snips or ??. Once you cut the shape you want you just clamp it in place, drill some 6mm holes and bolt it in place with SS hardware. I can send you pics of the Rally Pro and Classic F650 if you are interested. If you work carefully people will ask where you bought them.

Pics please Charlie

Charlie,

If you could post some pics that would be cool. Do you think it is possible to purchase some Acerbis spoilers and then simply retrofit them to the 1150GS hand guards?

Here are the Rally Pro and F650 Classic (mounted on a Honda NX650)

I have asked for a picture of the F650 parts we made, but it will be a couple of days at least before I get it. They are almost identical to what I would do for theR1150R.

I haven't seen a good picture of the spoiler for the Acerbis Rally Pro guards, but the one for the Rally wouldn't work well with the 1150GS handguards IMO.

Need a little info CC if you please

Post by hotzuk »

Charlie,

Thanks for the great pics. I now have another winter project to work on. Hey, not sounding stupid but what does ABS stand for? I know it is not anti-lock brakes and I am too lazy to google it. Where is the best place to purchase a sheet? The rest seems pretty easy. Cut your template and mount it up. :)

Everybody knows its acrylonitrile-butadien-styrene.

I just look in the yellow pages under "Plastics-Rods, tubes, sheets etc."

If listings are sparse in your area just call whatever plastic listing there is and ask them for leads, but in a larger city there will be lots of listings. If there are several call more than one as there can be a 2 or 3:1 variation in price. I'm pretty sure I paid ~$15 for a 4X8 sheet, but in smaller quantities it will be more/sq.ft.

It usually comes with a texture on one side. If they ask you want the finest texture as it will be easier to clean. I get a texture called "haircell".

Here is a link to a place that sells small quantities. If you don't live near a supplier mail order is the way to go. A bit of googling will produce other vendors I'm sure.

http://www.indplastic.com/index.cfm?fus ... roduct=170

BTW I had a bit of brain fade when I said 1/32" I use .060 or ~1/16" thick material.

I make the template out of stiff paper, old cereal boxes or the cover of the phone book. If necessary you can use a bit of heat to aid in making a bend, but not much. Get enough material to allow for "learning experiences".

Here are the spoilers for the F650 which are like the GS guards on my R. In this case I used Truss head screws. Available at your local hardware store.

I guess it was crowded in the garage so the photographer had to stand real close. You can see that the bugs are really bad this time of year in MN.

Why buy those things? It appears they can be easily fabricated from a piece of this ABS plastic and a heat gun to achieve the radius.

CC, great info

Post by hotzuk »

CC,

You have inspired me. I already have a heat gun. I have placed my order for a sheet of the plastic and with a two year old in the house, there is always a supply of cardboard to make a template.

Once I get everything together, I will take pics and post

Don't get too fancy with the heat gun. :D The material is pretty flexible, so I just bolted it on and then used a tiny amount of heat in the area of the bend and let it "relax" into shape. On the F650 Classic and Acerbis it was all done cold.
