Final Drive Oil Change Interval

Post by vroomr »

So, what's the recommended oil change interval on the 2007 final drive, which was originally spec'd as once at 6 or 7 hundred miles? I've got the maintenance schedules from A & S, but these are from 2006 and are silent on the final drive.

The latest I've seen is 24,000 mile intervals. It had been 12,000 mile intervals, but when BMW started selling the Castrol rear-drive lube they extended the interval to 24,000 miles (which seems quite reasonable to me - that's when I've been doing it and the old lube looks exactly the same as the new lube going in, no signs of crud..)

I change my rear end lube when I change my rear tire. That is between 10,000 and 12,000 miles. I also grease the spline on the rear universal joint as well. While I have the rear tire off I do it all.

Thanks.

Would've been interesting to have been a fly on the wall when BMW started seeing a spike in final drive failures.
