Selling Bike - Advice on Executing Fly & Ride?

Selling my R12R (sniff, sniff) and have a buyer. Reaching out to the wealth of experience and looking for some advice on executing a fly & ride for the guy looking to buy my bike and take it back to Texas. An hour of searching (VA and TX DMV sites, google, this and other forums) has yielded zero results...

Scenario:
1) My bike is registered in NY (long story) but physically in VA. Clear title in hand that will go to the buyer with bill of sale upon full payment. (So no financial complications)
2) Buyer from Texas and wants to fly in and ride the bike back - but needs plates or some way to do so legally.

Seems to me that he either needs to register it in TX or in VA, but he isn't a VA resident, and won't have the title/bill of sale until he comes and completes the transaction in person (can't do it TX to arrive "with plates"). OTOH, I could be missing something obvious... Anyone have any ideas on how to make that happen? Please help!

He will need to bring sellers affidavit for you to complete for his Texas registration. With bill of sale and that...why can't he drive it home with the current plates?

Most insurance covers new purchases for a bit...I bought and drove both mt current cars to Texas then registered and plated them on arrival.

It is really his dilemma...what's he say?

I've done the fly & ride (or drive) thing four times, all purchases made >1000 miles from home.

1. Buyer should call his DOT or equivalent to confirm which documents will be required for registration in home state.

2. Buyer should also get insurance in order and notify insurer of the road trip plans.

3. CYA for both parties via sales agreement with Notary Public.

4. Cut the deal at your bank. Deposit funds then & there, plus take care of #3 on bank premises.

5. Suggest that Buyer ship riding gear ahead of time. Makes the flight simpler.

I've never had to do any licensing etc at the purchase location.

Thanks for the simplification and CYA suggestions. I'm just looking into it to try and help him out a bit, but I agree - it's ultimately his dilemma.

Because amazingly enough, NY wants the plates back - and I have a pretty short timeframe to turn them in before I start getting fined.

Ok, how does NY know when you sell the bike?? I bought in AZ once and mailed the plates back. Took less than a week.

Insurance company tells them when I pull the insurance off of it, and the clock starts ticking. BUT - it doesn't matter - buyer backed out for other reasons. C'est la vie.

Doing the deal at your bank does not ensure his cashiers check is real. You or your Bank needs to call the Bank that issues his check before he leaves with your bike. My friend sold a nice CB750 for a worthless cashiers check.

Doing the deal at your bank does not ensure his cashiers check is real. You or your Bank needs to call the Bank that issues his check before he leaves with your bike. My friend sold a nice CB750 for a worthless cashiers check.

My last deal was CASH. Bank wires are also good (but it normally takes 1-3 days for the funds to "settle"). I did my "deal" at the local dealer and they provide temp tags.
