02 R1150R headlight problem- No headlight but High beam yes?

Post by Rjb456 »

I've read several threads about this problem but none have been able to solve my problem. Hopefully one of you experienced this issue and resolved it before.
I have no regular running headlight. No power to the yellow wire in headlight housing.

Facts-
2002 r1150r
All fuses checked and are okay.
Instermentation lights work fine.
High beam will light up.
Rear tail light and plate light works.
Little "parking" light works fine.
Plastic zip ties under the frame, above the horn were snipped off so they did not choke the wires.
Blinkers and all other lights work fine.

I've replaced the bulb, brand new, still no headlight. I've read on here that fuse 8 is often the issue, fuse 8 is not damaged.
If anyone has any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.

Other general questions???

Does anyone know where I can buy replacement telelever covers?
Does the red light on your Hazard switch always stay on?
Or where to buy a replacement "c" clip, ( the one that holds the rear brake caliber pin in place)?

The only one I can answer is that my hazard button is always illuminated when the key is in the on position.

I suggest tracing the yellow wire back to the plug on the left side of the stub frame under the tank to see if it is a connector problem. My first inclination would be to check for power at the connector (with ignition switch on) and when you find it you will have isolated the problem to the wire going forward to the headlight housing, which may have broken from being twisted while steering.

If there is no power to the yellow wire at the connector then you probably have to look at the handlebar switch...not something I've disassembled.

The part you want is in #7 below.

Unfortunately you can't buy just the 'C' clip. You haved to buy the lot.
US$21.19 from Max BMW

I lost mine a couple of years ago and eventually replaced it after buying the kit. You don't say where you live but if in the States try Max BMW. I got mine from Motorworks in the UK. http://www.motorworks.co.uk/vlive/Home/index.php

I rode without the 'C' clip for 15000 km and lived to tell the story. If you choose this course just make sure you punch the disc pad pin all the way in so that the olive shaped do-da on the end fully engages the recess in the calliper. This friction fit stops the pin backing out.

Thank you both for the info. I will attempt to trace the wire. From what I see it runs back and then meets up with a much larger wire loom. Does anyone know where the plug is? Currently I've taken everything plastic off, including the tank, so I can diagnose this problem.

Yes I live in the states. (New York)

I just bought the bike. The head light was out when I bought it. It has 9k for mileage.

What is the purpose of the space between the battery and the motronic control unit? I'm talking about right in front of the battery. Is this storage?

It's where BMW mounts the ABS pump assembly, but it can be used for whatever you want if that's not in there. I mounted an airhorn and a 12VDC compressor there.

Sorry, I don't know exactly where that connector is...I figure it would be on top of the stub frame under the tank. You can just test the handlebar switch if you can't locate it.

I would assume it could either be the switch (humidity/corrosion), a faulty connection or a problem with the cable(s). The switch is easy, just open the housing and apply some contact spay. The see how it goes. The cable is more difficult as you would have to measure the cable with your multimeter and locate the point where the mis-contact occurs. You'd probably have to remove the tank to trace/measure the wire in question.

Found the problem... Broken wire under tank. It was not easy to find, I had to remove the complete wire loom.

Thanks for the replays.

Good job sluething out that problem...can you tell what caused the wire to break? Did it melt or was it cut by a wire tie, or...?
Inquiring minds want to know!
