Partially Dim Speedo

Post by jobooth321 »

Just picked up an '05 Rockster. Love it! Noticing that the top of the speedo is dim. The rest is nicely illuminated. I was getting ready to pull it apart but was wondering if there is more than one bulb that lights the speedo or if this is just normal?

Good question, timely. Will soon disassemble my Rockster instruments for repairs, allowing for lighting change to LED, per retrofits others have done here.

IIRC illumination of Rockster speedo is fairly uniform. Will let others comment, perhaps post a nighttime instruments pic.

It looks as though one of the four bulbs are out. I had the same problem. I replaced all 4 while I was at it with bulbs from an auto parts store. Do a search....the topic has been discussed before. Some of the guys used some special HID bulbs that really lit up the tach and speedo.

Good reminder about the LED instrument bulb (and that license plate bulb!) options for our bikes. I'm assuming that the LED bulbs stated as replacement options for R1150R Roadster will work for Rockster's R1100S-based instrument cluster, but have not researched this fact.

More stuff for Winter Projects shopping list:

Some searching here indicates that the instrument bulbs are spec'd as
"T5 74 37 286 Wedge" LED,
where each number is an equivalent bulb idnetifier?

And the R1150R license plate bulb is spec'd by folks here as
"bax9s" LED.
Had to buy one of these OE bulbs for replacement a couple years ago, IIRC $10+ for the special incandescent bulb!

Looks like Carlos had an informative post which no longer features photos for LED bulb illumination replacement.

Thanks for the model numbers, sweatmark. I'll pick up some spares then rip apart the dash.
