Windshield Bracket - II..
Or yet another thought:

MadStad RoboBrackets
A friend sent this to me. He had them make up a windshield and brackets for his Rockster, and loves it. They don't show an R1200R application, but I'm gonna email them and see if they might consider one.
Perhaps someone who lives in Florida can help out if they need a fitting mule?
Nice part is - height/position/angle are pretty much all adjustable without interfering with each other. Clever design if we can think of a way to fasten it to the R12R..

Re: Windshield Bracket - II..
Nice find, Don. The masked pinstriper comes through again!
Looks like you could mount the brackets to one of our sad little touring screens and mount another one on top. I bet it would be pretty simple to hook this together, and furthermore I don't think you'd have to get their factory to set up for our particular application - especially as there is no 'stock' windscreen for the R12R.
If any group can bodge one of these things together, it's this forum.
And if CycleRob gets his hands on one, it will end up half the weight, twice as strong, and lengthen your p3nis as well.

Re: Windshield Bracket - II..
It would be great to see Madstad make a bracket for our bikes. I had a Madstad bracket on my V-strom and it made a huge difference, reducing high-speed (actually anything more than 55-60) buffeting from potentially dangerous to merely annoying. The ability to raise and lower as well as vary the angle of the windscreen allows you to make a wide variety of adjustments and hopefully find the right combination of rake and height.
For those who aren't familiar with the V-stroms, they are notorious for having serious wind management issues for a large number of riders, so it's a much bigger challenge IMHO than smoothing out the air on an R12R. The V-strom is very long and carries its fairing high and forward, leaving the rider pretty far back behind the screen, you know, right about where the vortices try to converge. The V-strom also suffers from poor stability in cross winds, again because of the high and forward fairing/shield, the big tank and a top-heavy long-wheelbase chassis. Between the buffeting and large sail area, it was a real handful to ride on the freeway on a breezy day. The point is that if the Madstad bracket could make such a big difference on a bike with terrible aerodynamics, I imagine it it could easily handle the minor airflow management issues some of us have on the R12R.
I'll also e-mail them to ask for a fitment for our bikes -- I will definitely buy one if they will make it!

Re: Windshield Bracket - II..
Tom,
Some good news. I pointed Mark (owner of the shop that makes them) to the thread on windshield brackets.. He got back to me very quickly this AM with a few questions (he is already working on one for the low shield for someone in Norway.. anyone here?) He offered to work with me on one for our bikes and asked if I could ship (at his expense) my spare tall mount to him so he can work directly with it.
I'm waiting on the UPS info, and will likely get it out to him on Monday.
Based on how quickly he has gotten back to me (we've swapped several emails) - I suspect we'll have something pretty quickly to at least try out.
Will update this thread when I hear more.

Gon,
I have piled on. I sent an email also. Now Mad Stad has gotten two emails.
I like the idea.

OK, make that three e-mails! I just sent Mark an e-mail this morning. He is great with customer service. When I bought a bracket from him for the V-Strom, there was a small grommet thingy missing. I sent him an e-mail, on a Saturday morning, and he responded right away and had a couple of grommety things on their way to me via express mail that same day.redwing wrote:. . . Don, thank you for leading the charge on this! If my prior experience with Madstad's product and service is any indication, this could be a big step forward for all R12R owners who need more adjustability to find the right airflow for their ergos. Between fore and aft, up and down, and rake adjustments, such a bracket will give us lots of variables to play with and the ability to dial it in just so and to change it quickly for different rides. For that matter, it only takes a minute to pull over, make an adjustment, and get going again to see how it works.
Happy trails!

Re: Windshield Bracket - II..
Well..
Mark borrowed one of my Touring shield mounts (and the plastic mounting for the bottom of it..) and had them for over a month, during which time I heard nothing. So - I asked for them back. He sent along two templates to try to see if they would clear the back of the instrument pod - they wouldn't. He was so informed, and that's the last I've heard.
It appears he's too busy with whatever he's doing to pay a lot of attention to this project. At least that's the distinct impression I received. I've heard nothing at all back from him since I reported back on the template fit.
If anyone else cares to bug him - have at it.. I've given up.
