Question regarding differences in painted engine panels

Post by tlwood28 »

I have seen several pictures of bikes that look like this (this picture off this website):

Image

Is the black engine covers and black panalever front end OEM during certain years or painted after purchase? Mine are the more common silver, and I notice my silver side engine cover is yellowing a bit. Probably too cheap to spend the money to paint my bike like in the picture but am wondering if it is often done.

Thanks.

I love the black engine on the Yellow Jacket

I do not recall seeing any black R with black engine. More likely than not it is a re-paint.

I think I've seen a pic of a red bike with the mixed black-cases silver-jugs scheme. I don't know where those came from, either a custom job (especially the black telelever) or for some reason the engine was replaced and they used the black cases.

I like the way it looks though, that's for sure.

This is not a serious post - I'm just trying to work out what that black dot on the topic icon in the list of topics means.
I'm guessing I'll see a new one there for this topic after this I post this reply

I have a silver (gas tank ,side panels, jugs) 04 with the blacked out engine and telelever as in the pic that is posted. It is not a custom job although some people have asked me if it was. I bought mine new off the floor. And have seen a few others at the national rally but not many. No one that I have talked to seem to know how many were made like that. So if anyone knows ? I would like to hear.

I don't know where the blacked out telelever arm came from - but I wonder if the blacked engines are from bikes that started "pre-life" as Rocksters, but became '"R"s when the Rockster didn't sell well.
