Faulty (Front) Brake Light Switch

Post by ebincia »

My front brake stopped activating the brake light. The rear brake works to activate it, so it is not the bulb. I took the plastic cover (off the switch on the handlebar) and sprayed some WD40 in there and it worked for a while and quit again!
My question(s): Do I need a new switch? Are there any user serviceable parts in the switch that can be cleaned up?

Thanks in advance.

There is nothing serviceable with the switch. It's part # 61 312 305 729.

I would verify it is the switch before proceeding, by separating the plug and jumping the contacts (the ones that plug onto the switch) while the bike is running. I would go a step further and move the handlebar from lock to lock to verify that there aren't any broken/intermitent wiring.

Good luck.

I have fixed this switch on two ocassions:

first time the switch was dirty. sprayed tuner cleaner let it dry, remounted and it worked for another 20k.

The second time was this last weekemd. Suffered the dreaded zip tie attack, and has a cut wire about 15 inches down from the switch by the frame under the head light. After contemplating pulling the tank to replace, I took the easy way out, soldered and sliced with the wire in place, covered with heat shrink tubing and put it back together.

I used some electrical connection spray cleaner to fix the switch once. I did the dumb thing and tried to lube the brake lever pivot and just messed up the electrical connection in the brake switch. the spray flush did the trick on my 04 1150r.

Just like baltm604;same story here.
The stringent tyrap made the wire break.

Re: Faulty (Front) Brake Light Switch (FIXED!)

Thanks all...I really appreciate you willingness to help..

It was a broken wire caused by the famous "zip tie too tight" problem. I thought I had fixed this ("zip tie too tight") problem when I cut the ties to the frame on the left and the right. However, there is yet another problem area right behind the head light! Take a look in there if you already haven't.

Fixed with splice and shrink wrap.
