BMW topcase fitting question

Post by kantuckid »

I am looking at a used 47-49 liter BMW topcase that came off a GS and has the OEM mounting plate. Question: will that plastic mounting plate, fasten(without lots of fuss!,cutting, etc.) to my flat Bestrest ( www.bestrestproducts.com) metal luggage plate, which is fastened directly to my OEM sidecase frames? Thanks in advance!

Pederson?

Have a pohoto? I'm not familiar with a luggage rack made by Pederson.

But it sounds like fussing would be involved. The GS luggage rack for the System top box attaches to the grab handle mounts. Unlike the R, the grab handle on a GS is an east-west arrangement.

Plus the GS rack is not flat- it wraps around the sides of this...

Hope that helps.

Bear with me-I'll get it right now! Go to www.bestrestproducts.com and view BMW products in the pull down menu. The owner /creators name is Peterson and the Bestrest is a several style plate that allows you to strongly attach lots of stuff that wont go on a typical OEM BMW luggage thingy. Take a look as you have the right gizmo pictured in what youv'e done so far and THANKS!

I see their R fitting kit that mounts to the System Case grab rails. Pretty heavy duty stuff.

But getting the GS System Case to talk to that would be difficult. But why bother? Compare the expense/capacity ratio and there are several top boxes out there that hold way more for half the money.

Northeast Mountain sells some pretty nice Chinese clones that are cheap and come with a mounting plate. It would be simple to attach one of those mounts to your Best Rest bracket.

I presently have the identical top case to the one you refer/link to that sells for $79.95(I paid $59.95 on ebay) and is called x-large. I am looking at a BMW top case that is smaller but obviously better stuff. I have that metal plate as shown in the eBay ads you link to , mounted to my Betterest plate with hex head screws and rubber washer spacers . The case has never leaked in 12,000 miles of Mexican road travel. I did have to fabricate(from a carriage bolt) one of the mushroom "rivets" that act as a retaining posts for the metal plate. It is a little bit on the ugly side and not the most streamlined looking case out there , but actually serves its purpose. Kinda like a serviceable roof top carrier on a car-ugly but gets it done, thus I am looking at an affordable alternative.
