Tech Day in Gainesville GA?

Post by CycleRob »

OK, the other post gave me the idea, but posting this there would have hijacked it. [-X

The last time I remember a tech day was the one DVBBMW expertly arranged and I hosted early winter of 2002 in my Washington New Jersey M/C shop. The shop environment had everything we needed, like oil disposal, shop air, parts washer and bike lift. We were able to run the bike on the lift with the exhaust extractors connected for the TB synch. Because of the mandatory 100% participation in the hands-on, it took much longer than planned. Everyone, including me, enjoyed the whole exhausting winter day experience. One rider came from 4 hours away! We all voted that he get the door prize. There was an excess of pizza & soda that made the whole experience well worth the 10 or 20 bucks (?) a head donation. Plus, I got to meet 9 of the "R1150R.ORG" members. They're prolly still using the training they got that day.

I'm retired now and living on a fixed income in Gainesville, GA . . . an hour northeast of Atlanta. I have a busy but open schedule. :-k A 5 or 6 person hands-on, show-n-tell, 12K level service is possible in my 2 car garage where my tools are. I don't have a M/C lift, but could construct a low elevation platform. There is a lot of time available to make this happen. Is there interest in riders near enough to attend one at my house -and- a non-ABS bike needing the full "12 level" yearly service? I already have the new OilHead air and oil filters! Group vote (not me) picks the day and alternate rain day. 20 bucks each includes a filling home cooked dinner. You might want to show up just for my wife's cooking (or the Pizza place we chose). What say you?

I'm in, of course, but I just finished my 12K service, so someone else will need to bring a "service due" bike.

Robbie, if the timing is right I might just stop by for a visit and partake of the activities, on my way to my brother's retirement place in Blairsville.

I would love to come down and learn a few things. I am looking forward to meeting some fellow 1150R owners.

boxermania, Baton Rouge is a long way off, so I hope the 2 events can be synchronized. It's about time you stopped by and finally met "Miss Ann".

WildBlue, A quick check shows you're 200 miles away, a 4 hour trip. I like to sleep late, so you'll be fine making a 10AM T-session start. The coffee pot and (maybe Dunkin') donuts at the ready.

towerworker & Beemeridian, You 2 guys could ride up together and make this an overnighter if needed. It'll be good to meet my old friends again and have you see my digs & meet Ann. :smt058

Marty2, If I was in PA/NJ . . . I would be there with the tools needed & a folding H2O manometer.

sabertooth, We've already exchanged E-Mails and it looks like you'll have the easiest ride, under 40 miles. You could be here sipp'n coffee before your wife realizes your gone! :smt102

It's still early. Looking for 3--5 students or after too many weeks when the group decides we've waited long enough. BTW, Anyone going past a Dunkin' Donuts (strange, but it's rare in the South) could you pick up a dozen for me? The popular Krispy Kreme brand here IMEO sux by comparison. The difficulty in sneaking away from work might mean a Sat or Sun session. Makes no diff to me. The group, and maybe the weather, chooses the day/date. =D>

Dunkin Donuts are popping up everywhere here in the upstate... Granted anything you wanted would be super cold by the time I got there...

In all honesty I think I would make it there in 2.5 to 3.5 hours based on riding @ 60-80 MPH on I-85.

I am always up for learning new stuff and may even bring an electrical item or two to have assistance installing along the way (if that's OK)... I was thinking Stebel Nautilus at least... possibly some aux lighting as well.

WooHoo!!!

Depending on the weekend...Count me in. Saturday is good...Sunday belongs to the big man upstairs.

My bike sports the ABS option so no-go there.

It's a long shot, but if anyone makes their way to Atlanta by the way of Savannah, we can meet up.

It's a 4 to 5 hour drive for me but I could easily make a 9:30 - 10 start time.

I will watch the post for details...

WildBlue, don't let that stop you. Learning how to do valve adjustment and TB sync will be well worth it.

I would be interested in attending your tech day. Just need to know the date and is there any chance of checking the final drive for wear or if one could apply moly to it?

I have an R12R, but would be very interested in just learning to be more comfortable taking my bike apart a little. Technically minded, but not yet boxer savvy...and want to learn. Could I attend if the dates match up?

The list is growing. Finding my house won't be too hard if you have a GPS or are familiar with Google maps. For some reason, my well paved, lengthy dead end street still does not appear on GPS mapping software. It was much to my next door neighbor Jim's ire when he found out the $90 in-dash GPS map update STILL does not have it displayed! #-o

Why no ABS? I long ago decided to NOT work on any BMW ABS system because of it's dismal reliability record and being tied to that in any way. I've read about it too many times (here) where owners report some ABS anomaly on the trip home from their official BMW dealer servicing!

So far with the people attending, a Saturday is the only favorite that was mentioned. Because people work, it also appears to be the logical choice. Tenatively, a cheesy Lasagna main course sit down is planned. These Tech Sessions always seem to last 2 or 3 hours longer than planned because the group needs to understand the basics like TDC, and each person gets their hands dirty actually making settings. Figure a 10am start, the meal between 2--5pm by a show of hands and departure by 6pm the latest.

takemeaway, Yes you can!

sabertooth
Roxster *

The 23rd works for me. If it works out, prepare for the extra traffic from the Memorial Day vacation travelers.

PM sent Cyclerob.
