UK "Memorial Meet" 2009

Post by riceburner »

Just posting here if anyone is interested. (if this is in the wrong forum, apologies, but this isn't a "group ride", so to speak).

WHERE?
Vic's pub, Coalville (google map).

WHEN?
5 April 2009, from Midday onwards

WHAT?
This was from 2004:
The Memorial Rideout was started as a gathering of VDers to remember Storm - who died in 2001 (please let me get that date right! ).

At the time of his death and funeral (which some of us attended), many people on the forum stated that they were sorry to have not met him in person because those who had met him couldn't stop saying what a great guy he was.

So we set up the Memorial meet to do two things:
1) To remember Storm, and SteveS (who also died that year), and last year we remembered more VDers who we had lost.
2) To gather as many people together as possible - so that VDers COULD meet with each other in person. Everybody had the chance to meet with people they wouldn't otherwise have had an opportunity to meet.

......

People making their way to the Memorial Meet gather in the corners of the country to make their way to Castle Donington and it's a good system, and at least you don't have to meet 100 VDers at once!!

The last two Memorial Meets have been great successes ..., and lots of friendships have been made or online associations re-inforced and strengthened. I think we had 70+ the first year and around the same figure this year.

The 2004 Memorial Meet will hopefully be even bigger, and (with any luck / sense) will be a great day out for everyone with no mishaps. I look forward to meeting all the friends I've met on this day and others and meeting lots of new friends who have joined us since the last meet.
I know this is nothing to do with R1150R.net, but the reasons for meeting up with forum (community) members each year are still good and I hope that some R1150 nuts might want to make it. :) For me, friends are still the most important thing, and re-inforcing friendships is something I enjoy. :) I think that it doesn't matter what forum you're on - if you get on with someone then you're friends regardless.

I organise this meet every year, (tbh, it's not much, a large pub car park and as many people as want to arrive and meet the face behind the name), and would love to meet up with some of you guys as well as meet friends I've made from other forums over the years.

Might just get down there to meet you Riceburner.
not sure as to whats happening at the weekend yet..... but 'The Vic' must be no more than 2 miles from my place. I work on the Indusrial estate across the road.

Are you planning a ride out from The Vic? What else is happening apart from the 'meet n' greet'?

VDers? Visor Down?

No rideouts from the pub (some people join up to ride in together though from further away) - the main aim of the Mem Meet is to get forum members together who might not ever get the chance to meet someone who's posts are interesting/informative/usefull/funny or whatever (there's been no fights yet. ;) ) We started it after we lost Storm from Visordown and a lot of people expressed regret at never having had the chance to meet him - the Mem Meet is that chance for anyone willing.

Been doing it for 8 years now (or something!). It's the only chance I get personally to meet up with some very good friends who live a long way from me, life is often far too busy these days. :(

there's not much else happening - I know it sounds bit dull - pub car park and just meet up with people you've never met - but it seems to work out ok each year. We also tend to plan it for the start of the "riding season" so it gives people a reason to get their bikes out of winter storage. ;)

Quite posible - I've seen one going off (coming from?) the pub before (I think it was the mem Meet before last).

Are you going?
