OEM Crash Bar for R1150R

Post by lokeller »

Does BMW make a crash bar for a 2004 R1150R? Will an OEM GS crash bar fit the R?

Thanks for any input-

yes, the GS head guards will fit any oilhead.

BUT - they're only fibreglass with ally lugs, they'll give you 1-time protection in a spill - and they don't protect the upper half of the cam-cover.

If you can find a pair of STANTON head guards 2nd hand (they're not making them any more :( ) then they'll give far better protection.

A similar product is being made occasionally in England - have a look on UKGSers.com, they're made and sold by "Steptoe", but he doesn't make a batch very often I don't think.

If I remember correctly from when I was shopping for crash bars 4 years ago, the GS bars did not fit the R.The headguards will, but the title of your post did say "crash bar," right?

The Wunderlich bars are pretty nice. You can pretty much get them at any dealer. Chicago BMW gave me the best price when I bought them 4 years ago. They're also great to plop your legs on when you need to stretch out.

I got a set of the Wunderlich bars a few months ago, they seem very good. Nice looking and well engineered. They were a bit of a PITA to install though... :)

+1 for Wunderlich.
1. Nice place to install running lights like Hella FF200
2. Very easy to attach nice Highway Pegs.
3. Well made product that serves the purpose.

P.S. It does look good on the bike. :D :D :D

I purchased the Hepco Becker Engine Guards from A&S cycles...

They are awesome....easy to install and do not interfere with anything....

Has anyone seen this article on crash bars?

http://w6rec.com/duane/bmw/crashbars/

The author argues against installing crash bars on later model BMWs, but it appears the arguments against them would hold on newer models, like my 04 R.

Comments? Thanks and ride safe.

Interesting article, not the first time I have seen this. For me crashbars are undoubtedly great for low speed or stationary drops; I have never experienced (and would not want to) high speed ones.

The valve covers are great "crashbars" but for the fact that if there's a gash or hole after the crash, then getting home (assuming that the rider and the bike are still in decent shape) will be a problem?

Darn, how I wish Stantons are still being made.

Cheers
