Custom Flyscreen?

Post by mkerr »

Im interested in having a custom flyscreen/sportscreen made for my 2003 R1150R. The stock flyscreen is a little big for me (ya I know) but what I really want is something just large enough to shield the instrument cluster.

Anyone have any ideas or could suggest someone/someway to do it? Im going to keep searching but Id appreciate any help.

Thanks

Michael

I'm sure DJ will pop-in here anytime with more detail, but you can fit the screen from a F650GS to the flyscreen mounts (only uses two of the mounting holes, or you can drill two more holes in the screen) with just a little bit of cutting. It's a little smaller than the flyscreen and very cheap if you already have the mounts. I was going to go that direction if I didn't like the flyscreen (since I had to buy the mounts anyway).

Welcome aboard the board mkerr. Glad you could make it!

There is a speedster screen on IBMWR.org for $165, which seems a bit steep to me, but maybe that's just me...(cheep, cheep! ) Check it out at http://www.ibmwr.org/market/adlist.php?cat=oas

There's a pic at Bob's BMW site: http://store.bobsbmw.com/browseproducts ... 1150R.HTML

Maybe you could cut it down, but I think DJDownunder has what you're after, and he'll probably post one of his famous pics when day dawns down under :D

If you are interested in the DJ version of the flyscreen, and you DO NOT have the BMW mounting brackets already, there is a equivalent part available (and much cheaper).

This part is exactly the same as the BMW flyscreen ones (only black vs. silver), but are only 40% of the cost. You may need to spring for bolts of the correct size though. I suspect MRA was BMW's original supplier.

MRA Vario Mounts

I put together a DJ flyscreen over a year ago using these brackets, and I am very happy with the flyscreen, the brackets, and the look it gives my bike.

If you already have the screen, you can cut it down easily with a Dremmel tool if you have one.
I cut my Parabellum down last year and love the screen now.

Cyclerob has a nice little flyscreen on his unusually GOLD bike  There's a picture of him and his bike that shows his flyscreen really well about half way down the first page of "L'Beakster Bash 2008 Re-Cap" on the Great Rides forum.

You mean This Pic? I was consulting the all knowing tank mounted Zumo 450 GPS.

I responded to mkerr's PM and sent him several pics of the steps involved in adapting the Buell Blast flyscreen to my 1150R. The cutting, bending, drilling and SS bracket construction that integrates so well to the bike's lines that it looks factory. 8)

I just couldn't stomach the distraction of the bulging chrome plated retro looking gauges and the continual bug removal chore. That was money well spent.\:D/ :smt023

FYI, Here is that PM copy-n-pasted:
The flyscreen is from a Buell Blast. I got it in 2001. I was ready to place the order for a black one for $60 when the parts guy came out with a red one, threw it on the counter and said "You can have this one for 10 bucks" I said SOLD!

Because the 50R speedo is a larger diameter than the tach, the flyscreen had to be heated (on the concave inside surface) and slightly straightened out. Heat gun + distance to part + patience = just enough heat to soften it enough for bending and permanent deflection.

For mounting brackets I wanted (strength)+(light weight)+(corrosion free). Scrap tails from SS hose clamps fit the criteria and they were free. The chrome plated brass clock bolt provided a perfect mounting point for the top-center part of the flyscreen.

That's a great looking part that IMHO compliments the bike better than the BMW screens! Nice documentation, too (as always =D> ). Hose clamp tails! Who'd a thunk! :o

Mkerr...You have PM'd me to ask for more info re my little GS 650 screen...Well here it is.

The GS screen is very cheap to buy so I thought it was worth the gamble as to if it would fit..It only comes in silver.

Image

It's just big enough to protect the instruments from bugs and stone chips..Here it is next to the standard fly screen.

Image

I first noticed that two of the four holes line up perfect with the standard fly screen mounts.

Image

I then got a hack saw and cut an arch so it would fit around the headlight.

Image

The cut needs to be perfect..If you copy and print this pic..and photocopy it so the scale is correct..you can use it as a template.

Image

You can see the part number in this pic..it looks like 46632346398.

Image

I have since then drilled the extra two holes..although it held tight with only two..and also painted it black.

It works great..It stops the wind hitting you in the chest area. It's very quiet and there's no buffeting at all..and it feels like there's no screen when riding.

I hope these pics help you..Just ask if you have any more questions.

DJ

Great job on cutting the screen.

With a dremel? any tips? I have one that I am very tempted to cut down.

Yes Michael..That's it..and only 31 bucks..What a bargain.. :D (SLIPSTREAM DEFLECTOR SILBER 1 46-63-2-346-398 $31.36 )

Do you already have the fly screen..because you will need to use the fly screen mounts.

Construction tips:
  • I used wide masking tape to cover the flyscreen where I marked and cut it, since I used a variable speed sabre saw. No accidental scratches or gouges in paint and/or plastic. Saves work even if you decide to repaint it. I used an 18 tpi blade and mediun-slow blade speed to make controllable/clean cuts in the ABS plastic.
  • Use something approximately the same diameter as the headlight to draw that nice clean arc on the taped surface for the cut. Be conservative -- its hard to put material back. I think I used a pan lid the right size -- this worked well since it will follow the convex surface of the flyscreen.
  • I have not repainted mine -- the silver color matches some of the other trim pieces in the headlight area. Since my bike is granite gray, the silver blends in nicely also. I may break down and paint it someday, especially if I continue to get marks from rock hits, etc.
  • If I remember correctly, there is something about mounting the standard flyscreen brackets (bolt hole location/geometry vs. obstructions in that area) that can be a bit of a pain. You may want to do a search to find it discussed elsewhere on these forums. I do remember finding a ball-headed hex key wrench almost making it a non-issue. I also seem to remember that I ended up using bolts of slightly different lengths to get past obstruction issues.
  • Mount the brackets early on, so you can test fit the flyscreen to get it exactly right. I found a larger sanding drum (medium grit) spun in a drill press at a moderate speed was just right for removing extra material smoothly from the cut and making a nice smooth edge on the plastic. Of course, keep the work piece moving with nice steady strokes using light pressure.
  • I used the existing holes only. I think it was 8 mm bolts (rounded head machine bolts, SS), matching SS lock nuts, and a couple of SS washers. It looks nice.
Hope this helps.

no I never had the flyscreen...the full windshield came with it, and there are differrent mounts.

I think Ill take gordium7's advice about the MRA Vario Mounts. Much cheaper than the BMW originals.

Good looking mod, I think I'm going to do the same thing. Those bracket bolts that hold the mounts to the underside of the fork bridge are a bear to get good and tight. The headlight bracket is in the way. I had to make a tool, cutting off a short piece of an allen wrench and using a tiny box wrench on the allen wrench piece. Masking tape holds the "piece" in the wrench. Those bolts need to be good and tight.
Keep us posted and let us know how the job comes out, Mr. MKerr.

The right tool makes it easy! Try a long-shafted, ball-end, allen-head (hex-key), socket mounted on a 3/8" ratchet. A whole set (available in either SAE or metric) can be had for $12.99 at Harbor Freight.
