Larger grips or foam covers

I am looking for larger grips or foam covers to increase the size of the grips on my R1200R.I think the small size is the sorce of my numbness while riding. I looked at some of the cover's but which one's hold up.Any one using something thats working?I guess I'am just used to wraping these big paws around those Harley grips for so long. Thanks in advance. Bill

I have a pair from Beemerboneyard that have been on my bike since about a week after I got it.. still looking good and closing in on 13,000 miles. Cost was about $7 or so.. http://www.beemerboneyard.com/foamgripcov.html - hey - they're on sale.. even cheaper. These fit over the stock grips without much effort at all, and the heat still works.

Another possibility...Grand Touring USA grips...originally a Gold Belt company offering, not sure who makes 'em now...but do know they're still available. Had those on every bike I owned from 1980 to 2004. Sort of slight barrel shape, definitely larger diameter than stock, the combination of the shape and size cured my carpal tunnel problems, the fuller central portion of the grip fills my palm better and consequently improved my grip which allowed me to relax the tension in my forearms.

I've found with an 1150R that I don't need this solution anymore, but even on a Ducati 900 these grips worked really well. (Though I did get a few strange looks from other Duc riders. ) Think that Chapparal Motorcycle store in San Bernadino, CA still has these in their catalog. Due to the diameter of BMW heated grips the downside is you would need 2 sets of grips, using the "throttle" side grip from each package to fit the Beemer bars. And the solid ends have to be carefully trimmed off with an X-acto knife or similar. Think they're still relatively cheap...

I have the same problem with Beemer grips - Germans must have small hands. I put a pair of foam grip covers on my '05 GS, and it solved the 'hand cramps' problem immediately.

The day I brought my R12 home, I put a pair on its grips as well. I think you'll find that foam grip covers will solve your woes.

I got mine from these folks as Beemer Boneyard wanted me to order 15$ worth of stuff, and they did not have anything else I wanted.

Cost was 8.88 total.

I had the same issue with the numb hands and bought a pair of foam wrap jobbies to fatten up the grips from my dealer. Hated them and took them off after one ride.
The first person who sends me a private note where to mail them can have mine as a gift for postage.

Numb hands can come from a lot of things and we are all different. Make sure you are sitting in a neutral position on the saddle. By that I mean that without even thinking about it, you sit, stay in one place, and are not sliding forward or backward. If you are constantly having to push back in the seat, your hands will go numb. If you are constantly having to pull yourself forward, your sitz (I am trying to be polite here ) will go numb too. Neutral seating is one of the least understood areas of motorcycle ergonomics. People change handlebar height, use different grips, or gloves etc., but the real problem often is the saddle. BMW does not know how to make a good saddle in my opinion. For those of you who are also serious bicyclists you will know immediately what I am talking about because on a bicycle we adjust the saddle nose up or down to achieve a neutral seating position for our normal riding position on the bike (Note that this is closely linked to handlebar height and both should be sorted out together). For those of you who have not considered this aspect of bike setup, you could probably benefit if you heed this advice.

My numb hand problem went away with a Bill Mayer Saddle.

Tip for installing foam grip covers.

I used a piece of 30 grit sandpaper to improve the grip on the grip.

Installing instructions call for squirting diluted dish soap on the inside of the grips.

Slippery, slippery, I could not get any traction, then I saw some sandpaper on my workbench.

Volia! Wraped the sandpaper around the grip cover, instant traction!!

Just thought I'd share.

I put a pair of foam grips on my 12R for an 875 mile trip over the weekend. I agree with Bill Stevenson, I paid attention to a neutral seating position and in conjunction with the larger diameter of the foam grips, my numbness problem was cured completely. Thanks for the advice guys.

I installed a set of Neoprene Comfort Grip Wraps by NOJ, ordered from A&S Motorcycle Parts. Inexpensive, easy to trim and did the job beautifully for me on a 450km scoot on Saturday.

Barbacks solved most of my problems--made the bike ridable, anyway. Took away the back and elbow pain. However, I still have the numbness. It's time for a new pair of grips, obviously. Thanks to all above who shared their experiences.

One more thing, at the suggestion of this Forum, I bought a set of Grip Puppies and I do like them. The foam is fairly dense so the "feel" factor is not minimized. I did notice that becaurse of my small hands and the increased diameter of the grips, I did have to adjust the clutch and brake levers a little closer.

Are grip puppies the same product as the foam grips from BeemerBoneyard.?
is one better than the other, they cost about the same.

I don't believe they are exactly the same but very similar. I think the Grip Puppies are made of foam that is a little more dense. Regardless of which or where you order, I beleive there is a minimum order amount, something like $25.00. The outfit in California has lots of small stuff that I use and it was easier to meet the minimum amount.

I've never run into a minimum order with BeemerBoneyard.

FWIW - mine are still working just fine - 21,000 miles on them.
