Torque Spec's Needed

Post by ErikM »

I got my Ohlins today and I'm thinking of just putting them on myself. Or at the least the rear. I was wondering if anyone has a shop manual and knows what the torque spec's are for the various mounting bolts. Thanks.

Eric - from the Haynes manual for BMW R1200 Twins 2004 to 2006

Rear shock upper mounting bolt nut - 50 Nm
Lower mounting bolt nut initial setting - 20 Nm then final setting 58 Nm
Lubricate the shoulders of the mounting bolts with a smear of grease. Apply a suitable non-permanent thread locking compound to the bolt threads.
Not sure why there is an initial tightening torque for the lower nut, something to do with seating it perhaps.

Front shock upper mounting bolt nut - 34 Nm
Lower mounting bolt nut - 40 Nm
Lubricate the lower bolt shoulder with a smear of grease and apply a suitable non-permanent thread locking compound to the bolt thread.

Hope this helps.

Erik,

One suggestion. HEAT on the bolt in the telelever and paralever swingarms before trying to remove them. A heat gun works, as will a 200W soldering iron put on the bolt head for 5-10 minutes. BMW used a semi-permanant locking compound on them.

Here are numbers from the R1200R service DVD:
=====================================
(FRONT)
Spring strut to front frame, Hex nut M10 x 1.25
Loctite 243 34 Nm

Spring strut, front, at bottom to leading link
Replace screw, grease head, M10 x 50 x 1.25 - 10.9
Micro-encapsulated, Optimoly TA 34 Nm

(REAR)
33 53 - Springs with mounts

Spring strut to rear swinging arm, M10 x 80 - 10.9
Loctite 243 Initial torque, 20 Nm, Final torque, 58 Nm

Spring strut to main frame, M10 x 65 x 1.25 - 10.9, Replace nut, lubricate screw head
Mechanical thread lock, Optimoly TA 50 Nm

Don,

Interesting that the torque specs are the same except for the lower mounting bolt on the front damper. I gather the Haynes manual is based on a 1200GS mainly and I have found some differences in the torque settings between the GS and the R. Most seem similar but there are a few ....................Just goes to show it pays to check.

Mounted the rear Ohlins last night. Very easy, used a heat gun to soften the threadlock. Only thing I couldn't find was Locktite 243, had to use the standard medium strenght stuff.

Congrats. Now you'll find out one thing leads to another - you'll need a hugger to protect the Ohlins shaft from the crap tossed up by the rear wheel (it helps keep the underseat area lots cleaner also..)

Pyramid Plastics - UK - make one that's less expensive and IMHO ugly. Fred H has one on his bike. Dunno where he bought it, but I think it was in the US. Ones that fit the R1200S will fit the R12R also AFAIK.

Just installed a hugger from Nippy Norman's...

http://www.nippynormans.com/prodinfo.as ... 5&mitem=96

Pleasant surprise...the price shown on the web site is 99 pounds (where the @#% is the pound sign key?), but when it arrived the enclosed statement showed 84.26 pounds plus 20 pounds shipping. My cc bill also just arrived and the converted total is $214.74 (as of 3/17/2008). See the link for a photo. It's fiberglass, not CF, and the build quality/fit/finish are all good.

I'm using the Ohlins shock cover for my rear shock. Photo courtesy of Ohlins.
