I'm a new "R 1150 R" rider who purchased my first 2002 with 20,500 mile on it a few weeks ago. Price 6K. Good Deal? The bike is awesome and I really enjoy riding. The previous owner removed the cat converter and repaced it with a y cat. It backfires every once in a while. Could this be the problem or is there a more serious problem I need to look into?
I enjoy this site due to incredible amount of info from fellow road warrioirs riding "R's"

Re: Back-firing R
Hi Chris
If it backfires when you close the throttle and the motor is running against compression - I would not worry except if you don't like the sound. Mine does the same and I love it. You may be able to eliminate most of the backfiring by ensuring that all the joints are properly sealed. I recall that there was a posting here some time ago where someone asked advice on removing the rear wheel and Cyclerob discussed the issue of removing, replacing and sealing the exhaust.
As I said that is the type of "back chat" that I love to hear. I agree - it is a wonderful bike to ride and to have others admire it.
