Getting to the battery...?

How do I get to the battery on my R1150R?
I want to trickle charge it. I can see the battery top, under the fuel tank, but my fingers are too fat to be able to clip the charger on the positive terminal.
Ideas gratefully received.

Remove the bolt at the aft end of the fuel tank and you can raise it up.
Or buy an accessory socket plug and wire that on to your trickle charger. Much easier.

If you have an accessory socket fitted you can charge your battery via this. If not they are easy to fit, the wiring is already there under the starter motor cover and it is a simple plug in fit

My vote is to install the accessory socket and use that. Though it's pretty easy to do what Maduko suggested and just raise the tank to get to the battery, installing the socket takes less than an hour and pays off in the long run.

don't you have to remove the side panels and oil coolers ..to get the tank to lift up so that you can get to the battery?

Thats the best way. Be careful of the fuel line connectors and those tiny o-rings.

Don't be scared of removing your tank.
Removing the tank is not a difficult procedure: they are 13 screws to undo using the smaller of the 2 tork keys in the toolkit and 1 using the larger one. Apart from that there is one snap-fit electrical connector to pull-apart and the QDs to release.
The tank then lifts off in a backward direction.
Once you have tackled it once, it takes 10-15 minutes to do.
The only thing to be careful of, as already mentioned, is the QDs (quick disconnects). Removing the tank is also an ideal time to check the condition of the fuel lines and also to consider 'upgrading' the QDs to the Omega ones or similar.

Minimal...Unless you crack the QD. But I've had my tank off at least 10 times or more and I have been very careful...and they have never cracked on me.
Put a little silicone grease on the o-ring before you try to slide them together and they should go fine.

...and don't forget to put a piece of towel between steering head and fueltank. Otherwise you'll scratch or dent the fuel tank once you lift it up...
