Staintune Exhaust

Post by Radar in oz »

Has anyone tried one of these yet?

I had a Staintune on my R80GS many years ago and liked it a lot. Just wondering if anyone has more recent experience with the R1200R version, before I lash out.

Cheers

Looks good and Staintune is known for good quality, the looks are not as exciting as a Remus Powercone though or the BOS oval cf can for instance but that might be part of the atraction.

I'm thinking about the Staintune full system too.

I have the Staintune muffler (hmm - it's loud) on my F650 and have used Staintune replacement (or replica) mufflers on other bikes. Quality is very good, especially compared to composite cans. Staintune simply last. Full stop (opps, that's period for yanks). Another benefit of Staintune, at least here in Oz, is that it doesn't appear to drop BMW resale values the way "performance" pipes do (though I still put the OEM muffer back on to sell).

In the F650 CS there's a noticeable improvement in midrange (appears to take out a slight hole in the mid-range torque curve). Top end spins out much more easily, and in fact the F650 now pulls out of corners hard enough to make even an R12GS work to overhaul me. Noticeable increase in volume and deepening in pitch - I almsot never take the restrictor out because it's too antisocial.

A mate has the full system on an R1200GS - in fact the R12 fullsystem exists because the guy who owns Staintune rides an R12GS. The GS shows a noticeable real-world gain across the rev range over the stock system (bear in mind the R12GS motor is in a slightly different state of tune). He says the bike is smoother, too - as Staintune claims. In the R12GS, the note is deeper but the system isn't particularly loud, even with the end restrictor removed: most guys I know keep it removed and the volume is OK fro gorup rides and town riding.

I think the R12R OEM can is too big, and not particularly attractive, but I don't really mind the note and I don't need more power (unlike the F650CS, where the extra 10% is very welcome). Since this makes my reasons largely cosmetic, I'm um-ing and ah-ing. I think my money is better spent on quality suspension (Wilbers on order) and a better seat (Sargent, perhaps - hoping they start production soon). Staintune might wait a year or two.

I have the Staintune on my R1150RT and I've used them on other bikes. Quality is top notch. But I have the Remus Powercone full stainless system on my R1200R. I just liked the look of the Powercone better. Both seem to use the same design for the header system....a two into one with no cross-over in the front.
