illuminating...

Post by \\Mike_Lea// »

I went to the Pyrenees a couple of weeks ago, fantastic weeks riding. Traveled through Spain, Andorra and France... Best roads I've ever ridden on.

Before I left and as part of the preparation I was looking at my manual for instruction on masking out the dip beam. In the manual it states, remove the light cowl and accuate a lever which alters the direction of the beam.

I quite liked the sound of this; seemed like a really good idea. When I came to do it I followed the instructions - remove the four front facing screws. As I was unscrewing them something didn't feel quite right. The screw heads were really soft and it took some effort, with a little burring, to unscrew them. As I was doing it I noticed that the actual lights themselves were becoming loose. This definitely didn't seem right.

I checked the manual again and it definitely said that the four front facing screws should be removed. I looked closer at the light assemble and noticed there were screws on top and below the light cowl. It was only when I'd removed this I realized that what the manual was suggesting wasn't correct.

Also, there was no lever underneath to alter the beam angle. I ended up spending about 2hrs trying to correct the mistake I'd made; the net result being the lights were stable again but certainly not set correctly. The screws were obviously for altering the orientation only...

I dare not mess with them too much again as they now have a tendency to pop out. I'm quite hacked off about this, and I've checked the manual again and again and I followed the instructions as stated.

I can only assume that the instructions relate to a later model??

Anyone else had a similar experience?

Cheers,

M :)

I think the instructions might have been lifted straight out of the GS manual, which has a similar (but not the same) setup as the Rockster
Non quod, sed quomodo.

I'm really reluctant to mess about with it anymore, but kinda hacked off that the instructions weren't correct. Don't suppose I'll get anywhere speaking to the mighty BMW, but I'll at least have a try.

Doesn't make sense does it; providing duff information!

Hi. To reset the light for other side riding. Remove the cowl (nose piece) in front of the clocks. Pull lit off three lugs go into gromets to hold it on. Then remove two top and two bottom screws in the headlamp cover take cover off. On the dip beam look for a socket head screw located on the ring clamping the light , about twelve oclock looking at the lamp. Loosen this a bit and you will be able to twist the lamp clockwise a bit. tighten up screw, and refit the the cover and cowl. Job done!! The handbook does need a lot of head scatching... Lost a bit in the transalation I think and the pictures do not help.. Now go and ride about on the continent. ENJOY
