KFC?

being inspired by much information on the net especcialy this site
i started to do my own repair/maintenace.

in january this year bougt a 2001 non abs 24000? km no damage bike(sure).
no maintanace history so brought it to the dealer charge 500 euro.

bike drove well.

three weeks ago i adjusted the valves myself using the best of many suggestions

result: fast throttle response, beter economy, but a buffeting drive around 3000 rpm irrelevant of gear choise. KFC?

this weekend i replaced the batterywhich was only slightly weak, cleaned the airfilter! new oil and oil filter.

result: stunningly great running maschine in all rpm's and gears

no toutching of the TB's yet

Put down the KFC..it may taste good but it's not good for you..

The buffeting at about 3000 rpm is surging..and balancing the TB's should help.

After doing the valves yourself the TB's should be a piece of cake.

If you still have the CCP fitted try taking it out and see if that helps with the surging..or just avoid the 3000 rpm range.

Can we have a glossary of terms please fellas?

KFC = ?
TB = Throttle Bodies
CCP = Charcoal Canister? We don't have those in the UK...

KFC=Kentucky Fried Chicken
TB=Throttle bodies
CCP=that little yellow box under the seat that makes our bikes surge.

CCP = Cat Code Plug
Cat = is short for catalytic converter.

The CCP is just a simple jumper that selects one of 6(?) fuel/ignition programs built into the BMW Motronic (fueling & ignition) computer.

When I puill the CCP - no start - zilcho - nada. Replace the CCP - back in business

That's not the CCP. The far upper left yellow box is the starter relay. The CCP is the other almost orange-yellow one on row 2.

UK models do not usually have a CCP

I'm still bemused by the title of this thread. I think most of us know that KFC is 'Kentucky Fried Chicken', but what is the relevance in this topic?

sorry guys, for a misleading subject

the abreviation i was looking for is the phenomina that made BMW decide to use twin-spark.

my objective was to inform you that a reasonably well running engine runs much better after valve adjustment, with a great throttle response but has some surge at 3000prm but that was gone after cleaning the airfilter, new oil and battery.

Since we are speaking of tuneups....

How often do the Throttle Bodies need synchronization?

I was thinking that mine *may* need it, did it anyway, and was a bit surprised by the difference..... they really did need to be synced. I think this was the third time this year.

My current thought is to do them once a month ... but I may need to do them more often to maintain that smooth engine.

My bike has ~ 5700 mi, so I am coming up on the first major service and valve adjustment, etc. Will that improve the situation any? Will it "hold tune" any better or should I just expect to check it often until its completely broken in? What is the "normal" TB sync interval?

What has been other's experience in this area?

hello Gordium,

I bought the bike in januari, no maintenance history 24000 km.

had it serviced at the BMW dealer, valves and TB's.

now at 34000 km i did the valve clearance myself ( not that it was bad running, i would say average) and 7 out of 8 were slightly tight.

after adjustment a better running engine with fast throttle response.

now i'm checking the TB vacuum with a differential meter.
accuracy is 0.01 millibars and measures every second.

differential is on average less than 5 millibars (BMW limit) but it fluctuates between + 60 and - 60.

i'll do a second valve adjustment this weekend, and if tha avarage differential remains 5 mb off i'll adjust it.

Hey CycleRob,

You just helped me out of my surging/KFC/KFR problems! I read about the CCP plug under the seat before, but I didn't know it was in the fusebox. It took me 1.5 minutes to remove it, and it solved all problems.

FYI, I bought my red 2001 RR ABS last may, to replace my old (and completely surge-free, may it RIP

) 2000 R1100S. The testride was ok, but later on the surging started, only at low speeds. My dealer replaced the sparkplugs, and synchronized the TB's, without any real effect. Just when it really started to annoy me, I read your entry about the CCP. Although friday the 13th, I'm very happy now!
