My trip to an old bridge (IOWA CITY GUYS YOUR PICS HERE!)

Post by iowabeakster »

Well another day another joyride. I had no intention of posting any pictures today. I have shown you all this area before on "my afternoon ride". I brought the camera along, just in case something caught my eye. So there I am, on the side of the road takin' pictures of weeds, when a few fast bike riders pass me. They were very cool and slowed to make sure that everything is :smt023 . I signaled back :smt097

no no no.....really, I did this :smt023

Sorry guys, as predicted the photos are not great (bad photographer + slow camera = :( ). Below is the direct link to the pictures of you guys. These are the full size ones if you want to download. The rest of you (old farts on Beemers) are welcome to check them out if you like. I will post some of the better ones farther below, so you might want to skip the link.

Like I said above, I had no intentions of posting any pictures of my ride today, but when I saw this, I had to do it. You can't miss a picture of the "Worlds Largest"......Anything.
Image

This has got to be brand new. I have never seen it before today, just outside of town. This got my camera finger twitching.

Image

As I said above, I was dorking out and taking pictures of the weeds in the ditches when my new friends zoomed past. I take off and follow them a bit. Wouldn't you know it, they head for my favorite little dead end. I pull off to the side knowing that they will have to come back the opposite direction. Sweeeeet... action shots.

Image

Here are my new pals when they stopped to chat, when the saw me taking pictures on the return leg of the dead end.

Image

They rode past several times, while I took pictures from a couple different curves. The noise may have attracted the Park Ranger.

Barn, the date says 1893

THis picture of the bridge support makes me dizzy.

Saloon, the date says...never mind you can read

Image

I had to use the facility at the Saloon. I had thought that I need a signature "shot" to take on all of my "great rides" (Gypsy's churches, DJ's road kill...). I am thinking about bathroom graffiti. This was special, brass plaque graffiti.

There were these guys, having a great time leaving the bar. One of them decides..."I've got a real good idea". :smt030

He missed this last weed.

Funny stuff. Great job. I feel all corn fed <burp>.

2 thoughts:

1. Larry needs new friends.

2. Is that last flower giving you the finger?

Nice job. Pretty countryside to ride through. Gotta love those RVs!

So - What's the reason why all the old barns are painted red like that? Or is it a regional thing?

Not sure about the guy on the yellow bike riding the centre-lines. That's a recipe for disaster here as they use shiny smooth paint.

Thanks for the effort. Mick.

Herb,

Not only the last flower, but all of the lillies (including the orange ones earlier) seem to be exending the middle digit. It's like the flowers are saying, "Quit taking pictures of my privates, you dumb yokel".

If you look close you can see that the brass plate was oringinally riveted to the wall. Larry must have managed to pry it off the first time.

Mick,

Barns are red becuase red was cheap. The following is true, if you substitue "iron oxide" with "lead oxide". Don't let your kids lick barns.
Barns were originally painted red because back in pioneer days there wasn't much choice. Farmers used to make their own mixture, consisting of a nauseating blend of skim milk, lime, linseed oil, and iron oxide, better known as rust. "Hmm," said the anonymous inventor of this concoction, "this is not the milkshake I hoped it would be. But it might make a pretty good paint."

It was even so. The mixture hardened quickly and wore well.

You are absolutely right about staying off the paint stripe on the road. Despite that, I was extremely impressed with the young riders. They did a great job of "riding within their abilities". The youngster on the black CBR was the only one really moving, he was the most experienced/skilled rider. Of course, they could have used some more saftey gear also.

Zoom!

Nice iBeak

Thanks for the obligatory church shot. I need a new 'signature' shot as well though, so maybe I'll shoot photos of graffiti in the women's stalls, since most of you men never see that. (yes, "most" is the word I intended to say. ).

Two unrelated questions:
1)Have any plans on going to Decatur materialized yet? I have a photo request I mentioned to you before.

2) is there a fall wheat harvest in your area?

gypsy,

Your assignment was in Des Moines (not Decatur), right? Sorry, no real plans as yet. I do go to Kansas City to visit mom and sis about once a year. I go through Des Moines, when that happens.

It is too wet around here for wheat. Corn, beans and hay are the field crops in my area. Drier places like Nebraska, Kansas and the Dakotas are where you want to see the wheat harvest.

As promised - photos of signs posted in women's restrooms while riding yesterday: (I didn't post 'em, silly. I just took the photos)
