Hello everyone. I have about 4,200 miles on my R1200R and am getting ready to install a Wilbers suspension front and rear. Has anyone had the gas tank off yet? I haven't looked closely, but it appears that the front plastic cowling on the tank does not come off to remove the tank. Any tips or thoughts. BTW, hello to you Celticus. We met at the N. GA rally back in May. I was riding the black with white pinstripes.

Hello Mr. Average. Are you one of the Pelicanistas? I could learn a thing or two from that crowd. I've looked under my tank , been to third base but never all the way off, home plate, so I can't say for sure.
Why are you going with the Wilbers? You may be the 1st I've heard of
(those with R1200Rs) to change the shocks . You will soon be a celebrity on this list.

Yes that is me. We talked briefly at GMR. I was camping with Bob Hancock and Dr. Curve from the Pelican R1100S/R1200S site. I guess you could say that I am a suspension fanatic. I am convinced a good quality, rebuildable suspension is the very best money spent to improve a bikes performance. The stock suspension is adequate but that is about all in my opinion. The primary problem with the stock suspension on most BMWs, or most any motorcycle, is that the rear high speed compression is way to stiff if the sag is set correctly. It is ok over dips and such, but expansion bumps and cracks will rattle your teeth. To avoid this you need to back off the preload, but then the bike wallows with spirited riding. Everything in a suspension set up is a comprmise, but with a good quality suspension you can get much closer to something that will be satisfactory in most all riding conditions. Generally I leave my bikes stock except for the suspension. Some folks spend their money on pipes, chips, and other stuff. To me the suspension is the best performance upgrade. Hope you are doing well over there in east Tenn. I think I mentioned to you that I attended elementary school in Newport. I lived to tell about it too.
