Oil temp gauge

Post by cruiser »

Anyone know if there is an oil temperature gauge available for the R1150R? I can't find one anywhere... :)

There is not one available that is made specifically for the roadster, but a few members have installed their own. A couple variations, and I'm sure they'll chime in on this thread. I've seen the clock replaced with an oil gauge, and another digital gauge installed near the handlebar mount. The other factor is where to mount the sensor.

Stay tuned.....

Oil temperature

Post by def38 »

Oil temperature gauges have all but disappeared from engines. Instead, oil coolers and thermostated lubrication systems keep oil temperatures under control.

I would rather have oil pressure readout than oil temperature. But, BMWs are fitted with more than adequate lubrication and oil cooling systems. Neither is really necessary unless you race.

If you are interested in your oil temperature, borrow one of those IR temperature guns, point it at the crankcase and determine oil temperature by reading the surface temperature of the crankcase. You'll be surprised at what you find.

After you read the oil temperature, with the engine idling, check your exhaust pipe temperature near the point where the pipes join the cylinder head.....now that's HOT!

I agree with Cruiser: an oil temperature or pressure gauge would be much more useful than the clock on the instrument panel.

Hello Cruiser

Did you get a GPS yet??

Here is a link from this board with instructions on how to exchange the clock for an oil temp gauge.

R1150R Roadster oil temp gauge

Post by sweatmark »

Per informative posts from the old R1150R board, I had an oil gauge custom-made for Roadster installation using a VDO sender + guage, with custom gauge face that matches the Roadster speedo and tach font.

Never installed in our Roadster (now ridden by wife), can't use it for my Rockster, and the Better Half wants to keep the clock... so I'll sell it to an interested party. Not sure how much I spent to get it done! PM me if interested, and guess I should post some pics for posterity.

Daytona temp gauge is the answer

Post by hotzuk »

Hello, I am using the Daytona oil temperatue gauge. If you do a search on the site, our beloved Cyclerob once posted a very detailed installation on the Daytona temp gauge. I actually purchased mine direct from Cyclerob when we were both back in NJ. If you would like pics of my gauge I would be more than happy to post them for you.

FYI, When I saw the Daytona on an SV-650 racebike monitoring it's water temp during a dyno run, I was impressed with the size, readout and the fact it was powered by the bike when the engine ran. I ordered one for myself with the intention of drilling and tapping a hole in the front aluminum case located where it would always be submerged in oil. After seeing how much would have to come apart to drill & tap the temp sensor hole without chips flaking into the motor, I decided to use the blind hole below the crank pulley. It was a little smaller than the 1/8-NPT SAE male threads of the sensor so it became the easiest to install and the least likely to leak. Granted it is actually reading the crankcase wall temp, but in actual operation the reading begins increasing just seconds after you start the engine.

After installing it on my bike and seeing how responsive it was, I was hooked. I never realized how hot the motor got in city riding. It was alarming to see 258 degF (125.5C) after a few minutes of Summer slo-go. The bike even powered the backlite so it was readable at nite too. Those early Daytona LCD temp gauges were sold by my shop to 1150R groupies for very nearly dealer cost, at my direction, so that all my reading/riding groupies could benefit from that great little package's important information. About 18 were sold over the phone or thru E-Mails. I knew they would be an asset to anyone that bothered to own one. My original unit is still working AOK and is on it's 3rd battery that allows it to remember your degF or degC selection and selectively operate the display with the key off. The dealer cost has since increased for the newer model that shows the time when off (mine goes blank and did not have a clock).
Anyone wanting one now should first price it at several dealers, then PM me for our best price + UPS shipping. I am retired from my shop but can still make this offer happen again for all the 50R riders.
