BMW Warranty renewal

I received, in the post this morning, a warranty renewal invitation for my Rockster. Price? £659.

It reminded me of the guy who was moaning about the cost of insuring his helicopter. His friend asked him why, to which he replied that he wasn't actually that bothered about the cost but WHY it cost so much - as in helicopters have a much worse accident record than fixed wing.

I mused about the similar parallel with the BMW. Does it cost so much because the BMW is inherently more likely to need expensive repairs? (Incidentally, of course, fair wear and tear is not included in the warranty.

I'm not going to renew it, but it does make me a little nervous thinking about the possibility of ABS failure. What do you think of the price?

Way too high. No one's going to pay that for a Rockster, given their used value, and the (un)likelihood of a major mechanical failure.

no ABS, nothing to worry about.

they're bike old bikes, but the engineering is fairly solid and although a lot has to come off to get to (say) the gear box, I think they come apart fairly simply. (not done that yet I have to admit!)

Yes, I received that letter too. You can buy quite a lot of parts for £659!

I must admit I would have prefered not to have the ABS/Servo brakes, but I wanted the Edition 80 which had them fitted as standard equipment.

In all the years of riding Jap bikes, I never even thought of breaking down. But with this BMW I have been wondering whether to get some breakdown cover... Can't see me going back though...

who would buy at that sort of price? Have they ever sold any? When I got the leter I thought about it for all of a nanosecond. RR
