City Cases

Post by MikeB »

Hello all. I'm new to this forum. I just bought a R 1150 R off of eBay. Should arrive soon (not soon enough). Where is the best place to order/buy the OEM City Cases? Any other helpful information for a new BMW owner would be appreciated. Thanks....

Chicago BMW or Hammersly BMW (in VA I think) have the best prices on that kind of stuff new. Occasionally you can find them for sale used here on the message board or on ebay for example. Unless you remove the can or have the "lowered" exhaust, I think you will find the city lids to be a waste (since you can't fit much of anything in the left case because of the exhaust cutout.)

Check here, but there are a few other good sites for getting used equipment:

http://www.ibmwr.org/market/
http://www.bmwmoa.org/flea/
http://bmwsporttouring.com/ubbthreads/p ... Board/UBB2

and call your local dealers - they often have used parts and accessories.

Enjoy the bike and share some stories!

I just bought a set from Bob's. I sent them one of my keys in advance and they arrived keyed and ready to go.

Dimensions

Post by MikeB »

Does anyone know the interior dimensions of the BMW city cases. Is there room for a large laptop? Or maybe someone knows of an alternative way to carry a laptop. Thanks in advance for your help.....

Well, that depends on the size of the laptop! Some of the smaller ones would probably fit. As for alternatives? Figure out the best way to mount a topcase. I know the larger topcase from the 1150GS/RT bikes can hold a good sized laptop. Plus there are other alternatives out there. Look into the Pelican cases.

I carry my laptop in its carry bag in my right side full case with out any problem, plenty of room. It is a standard size Dell laptop.

They are small!!! (although i think they will hold a laptop) I have them and I wished I had purchased the standard size, Mine will be up "for sale" when I purchase the standard size. Just my opinion, Den

I had the standard cases on my R1150GS. On my Rockster, they looked terrible. I went with the city cases and they're great for what I use them for (gloves, jacket liner, maps, etc.).

I'd carry a laptop in it's rucksack/case then bungeed to the pillion seat.

I wouldn't want it moving about in the pannier, and the paddig of the seat will give it extra protection from damaging vibrations and shocks.

My small notebook PC ("laptop" is soooo 1990s...) will fit in the R-H-S full case, but not with the City lids fitted - I have a tiny nylon padded bag for it, but it's just an awkward shape for panniers to manage.

I strap mine very securely to the pillion seat with Andy Strapz flat strapz, as previously promoted ad nauseum on here (I'm a Fan Boy okay?) Better still would be a top box, or even a Crumpler messenger bag, to maintain your lane-splitting capability - I very rarely use my cases at all these days.

Den, did you know you can buy just the lids for the system cases?

I really like the city cases, and my soft-sided briefcase fits in the
right-hand case pretty well.
