500 Miles in Coker Creek, TN

Post by jb44 »

Some riders do 500 miles in a day. It took me five days... and my 1150R had to stay in the garage...

Coker Creek is a mountain community located in southeastern Tennessee. It is the birthpalce of the Church of God, the location of a gold mining operation in the late 1800's, and is along the path of the historic Unicoi Turnpike through the southern Appalachian Mountains.

Joe Brown Highway (formerly the Unicoi Turnpike) starts in Murphy, NC as a paved road around the east side of Lake Hiwassee. At the northern end of the lake, the pavement becomes a dirt and gravel road.

The road ends in the small community of Coker Creek, TN.

Along the way, I took a short detour to the overlook at Hiwassee Dam.

The Morrow family cemetary. Some of the gravestones were actually pieces of rocks.

This doesn't mean me, does it?

Maybe this is why the trail was closed.

End of the trail. From where I took this picture, there was a 5 foot high wall of dirt with a sharp dropoff on the back side.

My first water crossing.

At the top of Wauchessi Mountain there was supposed to be a lookout tower. All I found was a radio antenna.

Here's the Coker Creek Falls. They were about a half mile hike from the end of the trail. While taking the picture, I found out my riding boots really are waterproof.

Atop another mountain: Buck Bald

In the five days of exploring, I put a little over 500 miles on the TW. It always started on the first crank, and never missed a beat the whole time, and found it to be ideal for this type of riding...average speed 15 to 20 mph, mostly in second and third gear.

...still need to find the Ol' Doc Rogers homesite... maybe another 100 miles.

Great pictures jb....Thanks for posting them for us.. :smt023

Your bike reminds me of an old Yammie 500TT that I rode as a teen ager (79).. http://w2.bikepics.com/pics/2007/01/01/ ... 22-320.jpg

It was a real bugger to kick start.

Yeah - Wierd bike. Can't say I've seen any around here!

Nice country. The burned out pines remind me of this place. We had huge fires in 2003 that cost us our forest industry and 500 homes and 4 deaths. Most is cleaned up now, and rebuilt, but forestry is a thing of the past.

I love exploring 'roads' like those you were on. Great stuff - Thanks.

Nice! I used to love trailing around here but we've all but been stopped by new laws that give all the rights of way over to foot traffic only...

Great report JB! Whydid you have to go and get that thing? Now I want one too.

PS: I've run up on signs like that myself and just turned back, because the Roadster was too heavy to go any farther anyway. Are you writing this from prison?

ice report and pictures. I wish Yamaha would get with the times and make a dual sport in the 400cc range, maybe even get rid of the drum brake in the rear! They've got to be losing a lot of business to Suzuki and Honda (although the Honda is not sold as street legal).

As versatile as the Roadster is, it's not meant for fire roads/trails... regardless of what the GS guys say.

A year or so ago, I had my 1150 "wheels up" in a ditch on one of those roads. I could not get it upright by myself. I'd still be there without the help of a couple of guys in a jeep.

Not yet... I just paid the fine....

I was wary of the signs myself, but several of the locals said not to pay the signs any mind. However, I wouldn't want to run into a Ranger along the way.

R4R&R: I agree that there is a lack of smaller dual sport bikes. IMO the 650's and even the 400 Suzi are too big for trail riding. YMMV

Yamaha used to make an XT350 but was discontinued years ago.
In the dual sport 250cc and under there are 4 only choices:

Kawa 250 KLR/KLX/Sherpa
Suzi DR200
Yama XT225
Yama TW200

Being vertically-challenged, the choice was easy for me. The TW was the only one my feet could touch the ground.
