Strange digital display "feature"? Diagnostics mod

At the end of last nights marathon auxiliary light install, I had to reset the clock on the display since I'd disconnected the battery..

I was trying to do so - holding down the clock button (top button) - and somehow I got the display into a mode where nothing was showing except the number 1 - on the right at about clock height. If I pressed the button, it next displayed 2..

Somehow I suspect it got into a diagnostics mode (which is fairly common actually on BMW cages for the instrument display) - but not wanting to explore too deeply (on the cages you can royally fook things up), I just cycled the ignition switch and then was able to set the clock normally.

Just curious if anyone else found this mode? Or has any knowledge of the functions. On the cages you can add correction factors for the OBC's computing of fuel mileage remaining.. wonder if it enables correcting the built in speedo error.. that would be fairly cool.
