1st camping trip, good ride in PA, hope this works!

Post by zooomart »

I was due for a road trip. The weather was forecast great for a week and I was ready for something other than a laptop. I picked up some light and fast camping essentials and planned a trip to the Gettysburg area of PA. Some 400 miles from home. http://images26.fotki.com/v911/free/d8a ... 1184006232

I rode across Pa on 30/40 and the first national highway which along the Maryland/PA border. Not the most inspiring roads but interesting scenery. My goal was to make the Gettysburg Campgrounds by 6pm, so I hopped on I-68 toward Hagerstown. I had some nice twister's on Old 40 that parallels I 68.

The rodes around Gettysburg are beautiful but difficult to do much carving without imperial entanglements. I traced the river toward Harper's Ferry and was rewarded with rolling hills and and sunshine.

By far the best riding was central PA through the hill country. There is a piece of brilliance from Tyrone ( off I-99) highway 453/729 toward DuBois.

Posted as 45mph, the 50 miles of road was perfect... almost empty, smooth, and lots of tight turns.

I stopped after a nice bit for a stretch. Looking at my rear tire, I wonder if I was even close to leaning the R to the max. Can you get the R to the edge of the tread and still not touch down on a jug?

Sure can.

But it's no big deal to run to the edge of the tread.

I find that with a load on, and my suspension set pretty hard, the first thing that touches is the tangs or feet of the centre stand on both sides. Then the peg feelers get brushed. That's enough for me.

Choose your roads carefully though. The bike is a long way over when things are scraping. And different tyres have different profiles. My Avons seem to run closer to the edge than a Metzler I had on. A Dunlop I started with was ok to the edge, but just a crap tyre. The profile of the Avon makes it look easier than some more rounded tyres. The Avon is a flatter profile.

Any way - Enough of that nonesense - Nice roads and good report. Thanks for making the effort.

I have not figured out how to post pictures directly into the the post. I know that was discussed but not sure of the move.

Cheers
