Tail rack

Post by NeilS »

Got my BMW tail rack on the bike today. Nice looking, easy installation, nice integration with the BMW side cases.

Now I want to mount my Givi Monolock top case on the rack. I can, obviously, attach the Givi mounting plate to the rack, but I was looking for a more elegant solution. Any ideas?

And does anyone need a set of factory side case (only) mounts?

There seem to be a few pannier mounts on offer from guys who've fiited the rack.

My dealer's approach is they never order the pannier-only mount because you have to get the new one for the rack and most guys who want panniers also want the rack. In Australia, the rack frames are dealer-fit only (ie you can't order them 'on' the bike as you can the pannier-only mounts). So lotsa orphan pannier mounts floating around (I think my dealer has a couple that are free to a good home).

This seems to be the best advice for new buyers - even if you KNOW you'll ONLY have panniers, don't bother ordering the mounts. Every forum and club classified site seems to have a set on cheap or free - so you can get them at a saving. Your dealer may even have a set ...

The rack frame also has decent pillion grab handles, unlike the pannier mounts.

I like your dealer's approach. Mine orders all bikes with the pannier-only mounts. This results in lots of kicking and screaming when customers realize they have to throw them away when they add the tail rack. But it does increase the dealer's revenue.

I'm in the same position. The only more elegant solution I've come up with is the smaller and very expensive  BMW 28L top box!
