Sore butt!

Post by famousperson »

Does anybody make a touring seat for the R12R? Or any kind of seat that is more comfortable than stock? The stock seat is worse than the stock seat on my Harley Sportster, and that's saying something.

Do seat pads work? Does anybody have a recommendation? Please help, I'm dying on the bike after only thirty miles!

FreedomAir cushion. http://www.starcushion.com/consumer.php

Works well for me. I can do the stock low seat for about 4 hours. Then 2 Advil and I'm good for another 2-3 hours. Adding the FreedomAir cushion - I'm good for ~8 hours before needing the Advil.

FWIW - the stock low seat is the best BMW seat I've ever sat on. Most of them have been 30 minute seats for me - 30 minutes and I'm starting to squirm in pain.

I'm using an Alaska Leather sheepskin with a Butt Buffer Gel insert under it. With short breaks every hour to stretch the legs I can now do a 6 hour ride.

I was at the BMW RA rally in Asheville this past weekend and saw a Russell Day Long seat on a R1200R. Talked to the rider and he absolutely loves it. I've had two Russell Day Longs, one I loved, could ride all day :D . The other killed my rear end and cut off circulation to my legs & feet  .

I'm currently awaiting delivery of a sheepskin covered gel pad from http://www.AMSpecialtiesusa.com. Will post a review after I ride it for a few days.

I agree that this stock seat on the R12R is the worst motorcycle seat I've ever used.

I ordered a Russell Day Long seat for my R1150R but still didn’t get it. I will let you know the result later.

I've been using the Air Hawk pad. Not cheap, but I can do 400+ mile days, in our Georgia heat/humidity, without a problem.

On the BMW site they have a new item they call a "Comfort Seat" for $319. Since that's cheaper than a Russel or a Mayer, I may give it a try.

I saw that also - it's the standard seats. Note that they only list a LOW and HIGH version - these are the same low and high seats you have a choice of when purchasing the bike.

Finding this out took my dealer's parts department about an hour on the phone with BMW-NA's parts people. Apparently ALL the Roadster seats are "comfort" seats in BMW's mind.

You obviously didn't ride on a stock R1200ST seat. THAT is the worst ever.

You're right, I didn't ride the R1200ST but if that seat is worse than the R12R, I don't even want to be in the same room with it...

I feel your pain! At first I tried the beads, and that did nothing. Then I tried the Alaska sheepskin pad and it didn't improve my ride quality at all. I recently received a sheepskin covered getl pad from American Specialities-usa. With the gel pad I can ride for an hour at a time, but I must dismount after that to get the blood flowing again.

This afternoon I took the seat over to a custom auto upholstery shop which also does work on motorcycle seats. Had a chat with the owner and he thinks he can help me out. I'll be out of town for a week so I left the seat with him and will pick it up when I get back.

Desparately seeking a solution to my seat-itis condition....
