BMW Sport shield vs Taller BMW shield

BMW Sport shield vs Taller BMW shield
I now have both, and can comment on both, from the point of view of a 5'7" rider with a 28" (tall-day) inseam, low-seat option. The inseam gives some idea of chest-head-height in the seat. Just giving your overall height doesn't do this.
Sport shield - provides wind deflection to about upper chest area. Sort of feels like someone pushing on my chest about upper sternum area (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Illu ... c_cage.jpg)
Head was in clear air - and my Concept-2 helmet was wonderfully quiet. Neck was in the airflow as evidenced by cooling effect on neck when my collar was open.
Touring shield - moved the airflow upward. The air movement starts at about my chin level. This would seem to be a good thing as it takes the force off my chest at speed - but it has one downside. It makes the Concept-2 helmet a noisy SOB again.
The simple shape of the touring shield apparently results in some turbulence behind it that is noticeable in increased helmet noise.
Conclusion - At the moment - I think I'll leave the Touring shield on when I'm heading out for multi-day rides (like the ride to RA at the end of the month) for both less pressure holding on at highway speeds, and the better weather protection, and I'll use the sport shield for local/day rides. Wish there was something that did both.
I know there was some mention of the Cee Bailey screens in different heights by some members - would anyone care to comment?

I rode yesterday for the first time with the Cee Bailey 18" screen. I also have the BMW sport screen. The Bailey is definitely less chest pressure, but not total. It still lets some air hit the jacket, mostly coming from the sides or maybe underneath the handle bars. It should be adequate for venting in warmer wx. Wind pressure on my helmet is much less. No concern now about looking back and having to fight the helmet. My neck was totally relaxed after a 4 hr. ride. Helmet seemed quieter, but I wasn't using the iPod, so I don't have an accurate measure of how much volume was needed to override the wind and turbulence noise. Overall, I like it, but I'll let you know more after a 2 week trip to the Rockies that starts on Sat.

What's interesting is you had noise/turbulence with the sport shield. I had none - had clean air at helmet level. The air was hitting my chest right around nipple height, and since I'm shorter than you - my nipples are probably lower in comparison to the shield (plus I have the low seat on the bike.) I loved the air I got on the helmet with the sport shield, just didn't like having to hang on for life at speed with the wind hitting my upper chest trying to push me off backwards.
If you still have the 18" Cee-Bailey and want to recoup some of your investment - let me know.. It would save me the manufacturing time from them. - [email protected] will get to me.

All of these will determine what height you're at in relation to the windshield.
As I think I originally said - the sport shield would be fine for me IF I didn't feel the pressure in my upper chest at highway speeds. I experience no buffetting with it since the helmet is in clear air (Schuberth Concept-II.) I think the "Sport" shield is well named - great shield for general batting around on the bike - not so good for "touring" use.
YMMV and probably will - since your height, seating position and torso length are gonna be different than mine.

BMW tall screen
I have the BMW tall (it's not verytall really) screen and I can cruise at 90-100 without being uncomfortable. All day might be a bit much but an hour is ok.
I'm only 5ft6ins and had the low seat option. I have started wearing earplugs which I didn't on my VFR800 as there is a bit more wind noise.
I love the bike so far, 2400miles. Just had a trackday at Cadwell park (a small, undulating race circuit) and it went really well. Lots of confidence in it.

Phil - good info. I'll be trying a bit of highway cruising this weekend (not at 90-100 in NJ though..) and will see how it works for me. There is very little turbulence that shakes the helmet - good thing. Most of the turbulence seems about at neck level, and is pretty distinct there. If I close the front chin vent in my Concept-2 helmet, noise drops about in half. If I open the faceshield 3/8" - noise drops. If I move my head down just a bit (1-2") noise drops from the bottom vent. If I move my head up 1-2", noise drops.
So - I'm very close to where I want to be. I might try finding an old faceshield to clip on the shield at different heights above the tall shield and see just where it's quietest ("binder clips" are great for doing this..)
