The Butterfly Run - PART TWO

Post by MIXR »

Continuing on my Butterfly Run - I rode the 'wings' of the butterfly, which meant heading off to a place called Jenolan Caves, then on to O'Connell for lunch. I had to pass back through Oberon (the centre of the 'wings'), but didn't need to ride any of the roads taken earlier in the day. After lunch I went on to Bathurst for a look around the race track. I was going to return home via the same route, but decided to take an alternate road I knew, so .................. I headed south via another obscure backroad with lots of dirt stages. It went through Tuena, Binda, Crookwell and on to Goulburn again, then it was back down the highway to Canberra.

Phew, what a ride! Here is the rest of it. Hope it's not getting boring!

The sign says it all. Extra tricky when wet, and very, very steep with lots of hairpin turns!
Image

Here's one of the hairpins. It's a lot steeper than it looks. Damned dicey parking the bike!
Image

A nice wet 15 kph corner coming up. That's about crawling speed for you US people! Note how the road pitches in the wrong direction first! That's to keep you on your toes! The 'safety fence' is some rust steel wire mesh and a heap of termite eaten wooden posts that must be a hundred years old!
Image

This is Caves House. Built back in the 1920's or therabouts when the limestone caves were discovered. Fascinating place. Google 'Jenolan Caves' for more info.
Image

If you can't go over it or around it - Chisel your way through it! Uses partly natural cave structure and a lot of hammer and chisel work!
Image

More wet twisties. This would have to have been the slowest run I've ever done through here. It is a very narrow road though. They close it from 1145 to 1315 each day to allow the tourist buses to come down. No traffic is allowed 'out' via the uphill northern exit road at that time.
Image

The O'Connell pub and lunch at last. This is the small town where my Border Collie 'Kipper' came from. Nice to stretch the legs and rest my weary bones! Too old for tight bends in the wet. It's hard work!
Image

Typical 'healthy' pub lunch - This one's for you DJ!
Image

After lunch I travelled on to Bathurst, home of the famous Mount Panorama race track, the Bathurst 1000 motor race, and where a bloke named Peter Brock was 'King of the Mountain' 9 times. Peter Perfect they called him. Retired a while back and was killed in a 'fun' race last year.
Image

We name our corners after our beer of course. Excellent race track. Did three laps at a very sedate speed. Very steep here. And narrow.
Image

Back on the open road again, and heading to Tuena. Bathurst was the 'top' of my big loop north, so I was now heading home.
Image

Oops - More dirt. This stretch was really interesting, with a lot of these tight gravel corners! Makes for careful riding. What was that about me wanting a KTM? Yes please!
Image

It is very dry around Tuena. The drought has hit hard. These hills should be covered with lush green grass at this time of the year! Farmers are doing it tough.
Image

More gravel and some rain to make things even more interesting! Ok - I'm sick of the gravel now!
Image

There is a small (8 windmills) windfarm near Crookwell. Damned things must be breeding as they seem to be popping up everywhere! I think they have lost some of their novelty value these days.
Image

Yuk! - I think I have a big cleaning job to do on the weekend. The R seems to throw a lot of dirt out from the wheels that then sprays all over the jugs and everywhere else. My riding gear looked a bit frightful as well!
Image

Spotted this emu near Goulburn. It ran along the fence beside me, so I decided to stop and grab a quick pic. Figured it would do as a last photo for the trip.
Image

Hope you enjoyed my tour of the roads to the North of my home. I'll take you in a different direction next time. Still not sure I like stopping to take photos. Guess it depends on what sort of ride rythm you are in. If it's flowing, smooth and fast, I'd rather just ride. Still, I enjoyed looking for photo opportunities and interesting views. Hope you found it just as interesting.

Cheers all. Mick.

Well put Mick. I know exactly what you mean. It's a conflict I face on every ride.

Thanks for the great photos!

Yeah thanks Mick...I can only stop for pics if I'm riding alone and in no hurry..Sometimes it's just good to get off and stretch the legs for a minute or two.

Great pics..and there's nothing worse than a wet twistie.. :D ..on one of those pics it looks like your bike is just about to fall over..I hate that..you can't help thinking..uh-ow.

btw..Is it true they are going to re locate that giant Merino in Goulburn closer to the hwy?..and did you ride Bathurst the wrong way round or do a u turn for the pic?

Thanks again for the pics and report...I liked the pub meal pic.. :smt023

Thanks guys. Like minds I think.

DJ - Yep - The Big Merino is moving shortly. Really died after the highway bypassed the main drag through town. The servo next door closed years ago, which didn't help either. I did read the sign about it's move, but damned if I can recall what it said!

Did three laps of the Bathurst track. Two the 'right' way, and one the 'wrong' way to see what it was like. It's really scary to go the 'wrong' way! I'd love to give it a go 'at speed', but all the safety barriers have the exits facing the track. Not good if you came off. Almost forgot to stop and take a pic!

Cheers.

It really is great to see photos from far-away members... or members from anywhere, for that matter - thanks Mick, great set, and please do it again soon!

Great stuff! You have some interesting roads there! Pretty sure I'd avoid all that gravel if I came across it. Great that they let you on the race track, not a chance of that here! Unless you fork out a large pile of dosh first!
It is tricky with the photos isn't it. Do you take it one day then go again without and risk missing great shots... :?

How are you able to go the wrong way on a race track?

Jeff - Sorry - Should have explained.

The track is a street circuit. It's one of those old hill circuits that just never died, and has become one of our premier long distance race tracks.

It spends a lot of its time as a normal two-way road, with access to farms and a few small rural house blocks. At other times of the year, it's a full-on, very exciting race track! On 'open' days, you can ride/drive in both directions, just like a normal street. Most people go the same way as the race track, which is anti-clockwise.

It's a heck of a lot different going the other ('wrong') way! It has a fairly low speed limit, mainly as a result of some bad 'accidents' with people 'racing' and having head-ons, or just crashing out. If you do a few laps to check for cops and speed cameras, you can have a bit of fun, but there are a few residents who are quick on the phone and the cops can get to the gates before you finish a lap.

It's a long circuit, full of dips and hills and drops. They've spent a lot of money over the years upgrading it, and most overseas drivers who come here as uinvited long-distance racers just love it. Like I said, exciting. Google 'Mount Panorama' or 'Bathurst 1000' and you will get more info.

Oh - They also used to race bikes here in the seventies and eighties, but started killing a few too many riders. Bit like Isle of Man stuff, and just too dangerous for bikes in my opinion.

Cheers mate. Mick.

Geez DJ - No way I'd ride a bike around there in anger. I used to do some casual laps around there back in the seventies when it was a much less safe circuit and wasn't as 'restricted' as it is now. It was scary as hell then. It still is. I don't know how they go so fast in the V8's! It's so hemmed in and steep and tight and ............. you know.

Once they put up hay bales and air fences for rider safety, parts of the track across the mountain would be about three feet wide! It's amazingly narrow now as you know. I think I'd give it a miss. Don't want to see any more riders killed up there.

I was at a race many years ago (I'm really old, guys and gals) when it turned wet. Drilled discs were a relatively 'new' thing then, and one guy decided to improve his braking by drilling holes in his solid discs. Got to the end of Conrod Straight (when it was straight), and the discs just exploded. He was way up there in speed, and well and truly dead by the time he stopped rolling. That was my last attendance at a bike race at Bathurst.

I've added the downhill shot of the place where I parked. It points in the direction you race. Compare it to the entry on the way in, which I've repeated here as well. This is actually a 'wide' part of the track.

Great Great Great!

A racetrack that doubles as a commuter road? Man we need some Aussie thinking here!

"Buses and Caravans"?

You still have caravans?

Great tour Mick! Thanks for taking the time to take the pics and post them. I really appreciate seeing things from different parts of the world, in fairly real time as well.
I know its hard to stop and photograph, but it's nice when we can read about and see the places you ride down there.
I myself have not been as diligent in doing this as in the past. This inspires me to take that extra time.

Excellent report there. I really enjoyed reading it.

Mt. Panorama is a scary ride f'sure. I can still remember Mal Campbell breaking most of his body over the top. I have also had the pleasure of a spin around the track, and the steep bit coming down the hill is phenomenal. It twists as it falls at an alarming gradient. I can only imagine what it was like to race around.

It was a shame the riots put an end to it all. The mountain was anarchy during the Easter races way back then.
Cheers...and stay horizontal!
