System Case Liners

Post by sloopy_farklehump »

Added system cases to my bike during the winter (along with auxillary brake light and touring handle bars). I love them!

How do you pack them? Do you take them off the bike? Did you buy the high priced offical BMW liners for them? Did you find an aftermarket product that works well?

Thanks

I don't have case liners.

For long trips, I use a 'freebie' tote bag from some event I attended years ago (Trader Joe's cloth 'grocery' bags are about the right size, too). I've got those zippered luggage organizers already, so I pack the organizers, and then slide them into the tote and put in the case. I can tuck an extra pair of shoes, etc. in what space remains.

When stopping overnight, I still carry the side cases inside, the totes just make it less awkward to transfer belongings from case to drawer, or whatever.

My preference is to leave the cases on the bike and bring the contents inside. In the past, I used stuff sacks on one side and a freebee nylon bag that almost fit the other side for this.
Last Saturday however, since it was a nice day, I took a ride to Bob's BMW in MD and checked out the Kathy's bags. They seemed pretty well made, and at about $100, were much cheaper than the BMW liners. Of course I wound up buying a set.
You can see them at the Bob's web site:

I have the Kathy liners as well. Very handy. The only thing I was surprised about is that there is no shoulder strap or attachment points for same.

There are some other brands out there, including Cee Bailey:

The very first time I had to use system cases, I could not put all my stuff in them without a straggle. In addition, when you need to open the case, all your stuff will fall out. I find the liners do give me a chance to pack in the house or inside the tent, and just take the liners out to the bike. I was in a hurry and got Kathy’s bags. I do not think that at the time I was buying the liners, Cee Bailey’s was making them for our bikes. I do like Kathy’s journey bags, but if I have to do it again, I will take Cee Bailey’s liners with the shoulder strap and the ones that can expand, just in case if in the future I will decide to change to the bigger lids.

Bin liners

Post by qfman »

I hate to sound cheap - but I have always packed my clothes etc into 2 garbage bin liners, squeezed all the air out, and then tied off the end. It leaves me with a malleable mass to then form into the odd shape of the right side bag. The smaller left bag carries wet weather gear, spares, etc.

When I get to the nightstop I take the right bag in and leave the left bag on the bike. Then I can repack the pannier in my room rather than in a freezing carpark etc. Refitting the pannier takes about 1 second.

Solution cost = $0.00
