I'm over 6' and also about 90 kilos..and I found that the standard fly/speedster screen that comes on the RR down under was not good at freeway speeds and at some speeds buffeted pretty bad...but it does look good..IMO
This is what I have (see pic below) it's from a 650GS..btw where abouts in Oz are you..you are welcome to have a go on my bike and see for yourself how quite it is and how it still stops the wind hitting you in the chest..I think the wind hits about shoulder level and leaves the helmet in clean wind.
As Karl would say..good for you for doing the experiment (with the wind thingies)..you must have done some yachting in your past.

I was at my local BMW dealer one day and saw a new 650GS on the floor (new 05 model I think) and noticed the small silver plastic wind deflector that it had and wondered if I could make it fit my bike.
I took a measurement across the two holes and it was the same as two of the holes in my standard fly/speedster screen..I though all I need to do is cut the bottom bit around the headlight.
I asked for a price and was surprised at how cheep it was (about $50 I think) and bought one...It only took a few minutes with a hack saw to cut it and it was a perfect fit.
The first pic shows how it compares with the fly/speedster screen..and yes it uses the same mounts..later on I drill the second pair of holes and used all four bolts but just two work fine.
The second pic shows the bit that I cut off..it also shows the part number..this cut needs to be perfect or it will be stuffed..I can send you a template to use if you want to make one.
I often wondered if I should paint it black or leave it silver..I saw on on ebay for $20 and bought it..cut it..and had it painted black..I like back better now..and I have not got around to drilling the second set of holes yet but I will soon.
I think a lot of 650 GS guys take them off and put a real screen on their bikes so you might be able to pick one up cheap also...good luck with it.

I didn't take the part number, do you think there'd be more than one version?
Just got my bike back from 6k service. Had the speedster screen installed. It's great. 70 mph and just a little wind on my shoulders and clean air at my helmet. I also have the touring screen for long trips but I'll try the speedster for a couple day trips to see if it will work all day.

stevedore - You're in the same boat as me, I'm flipping between no screen, the speedster, an MRA Vario and have now ordered the F650GS as per DJs mod!
IMO, if your cruising speed tops out about 70mph & you have a fullface helmet + earplugs, you'll be just fine with the speedster (and I also think it's the best looker on our bikes).
I've so far struggled to find a combo that works with my Schuberth J1 semi open face, plus I prefer to stay around 80mph on the highways where the noise becomes unpleasant for me. The noise increases exponentially once you get past 60mph in my experience.
I'll be doing 1,000 miles across France next week, and hopefully my new screen will be here when I get back. DJ has sent me some instructions, so I'll photo & post my experiences here when it's finished.

This is the 650 GS screen..well it's more of a wind deflector..it stops that full blast of wind that hits you in the chest when you have no screen.
It does not have any buffeting that all screens seem to have..and it also feels like your riding naked..and the best thing is that it's so quiet.
They are very cheap to buy..only take less than an hour to modify to fit and it mounts on the standard fly screen mounts.
I love mine...Here's some more info.
Two of the holes line up perfect..(the two lower side holes)..btw..it comes in this silver plastic.


Once the lower piece is cut out you have a perfect fit..I just used a hack saw..and gave the edge a light sand.
You can also drill and add the other two bolts..but just the two hold fine.

The piece that needs to be cut out needs to be just right or you will have to throw it in the bin...here's a template for anyone thinking of doing this.
Just print and photocopy..and resize it till the scale is right..this 2nd pic also shows the part number.


Here's the view that you get..it's just big enough to protect the instruments from bugs and stone chips.

If you are happy with it you can paint it to match the bike.

That is still a great looking screen. I got the speedster cause it was easier to write a check than find a stable GS screen and modify. I like the speedster so far as it provides clean air at helmet level and takes away wind blast at my torso. I think I could travel with just the speedster but I have the touring screen just in case.

With all this talk about screens and laminar flows no one has mentioned Reynolds Effect, and I for one am not either.
There we were having a nice discussion and in pops desmophil with some (apparent) facts. what a way to ruin a good chat.
For what its worth, I have the factory tall or touring screen on my R and at highway speeds it does make a racket in my helmet- (HJC AC3). I found some fat rubber washers and put them behind the top/upper mounting points of the screen , thus giving it a tilt forward (or as desmo said, minutely taller due to the tilt angle).
I think the 1/8th inch tilt had a definite effect on the helmet noise, and I am amazed at the difference such a small change made.
I plan to go for more, and will report.

Laminar lip
Just another opinion. I just installed a laminar lip on my 01 r1100r this weekend. I have only ridden it about 50 miles, but it has made a very noticable difference. I can now ride comfortably at 75 with my faceshield open. I can now hear the engine and exhaust (Remus) at highway speed. At this point, I would highly recommend the lip.
