Our 'new' Great Ocean Road.

Post by DJ Downunder »

Our GOR..(Great Ocean Road)..is one of Australia's most famous motorcycling roads...I've done 'Great Rides' posts with pics about it before.

But it's getting very busy now and there always seems to be roadworks going on and it's always got busy traffic...Well...we now have a 'mini me' GOR.

It's from Inverloch to Cape Patterson...When I first heard about this road being just like the GOR (but a little smaller) I thought..but that's a bumpy dirt road...well it was when I was a teenager (35 yrs or more ago)..that was the last time I was on that road.

Well it's a beautiful sealed road now..and nice and quite..and closer to Melbourne than the real GOR...what a bonus!

Todays weather forcast was for a mild and overcast day..the first cloudy day that we've had in ages..but what the heck..I'm gonna check out this new road.

My first stop was for a pic at this giant bird at Gumbuya Park.

Image

Back on the road to the mini GOR....Check out those new mirrors.

Image

After riding for an hour or so I stopped off at the Giant Stump.

Image

And here it is.

Image

Back on the road again...I stopped for a picture of this letterbox.

Image

Back on the road...and hoping that no one is coming up behind me while I take this pic.

Image

Another pic stop at a small town with a funny name.

Image

Fire in the hole!!..I could smell smoke in the air...and see a small fire down in the valley...just burning off I think.

Image

Another letterbox pic...This one's for boxerboy...(he's the worlds biggest Bombers fan)

Image

This road to Inverloch has great views on either side of the road as it follows a high ridge.

Image

I've never seen a sign like this...so I took a pic.

Image

Oooh look...cows...must take a pic....thanks GypsyRR..I thought they were bulls..

Image

More roadside views.

Image

This is a lookout point where you can see the ocean...and that's Inverloch in the far distance.

Image

Back on the road and one more pic stop before Ivnerloch...btw..I've never 'ever' seen a Koala on the road...they live and sleep in trees.

Image

Here we are..Inverloch...it's where I spent many Christmas and school summer holidays when I was very young.

When I was a kid we would stay in a local caravan park and spend all day at the beach..I've even caught my first fish off this pier once with a hand reel.

Image

Image

Image

It was now past lunch time and I was feeling a bit peckish...so I looked for a place in Inverloch to stop at and eat.

Image

Cheers!...wow..Coke in a glass bottle...nice.

Image

I had pancakes with blue Berry's/black Berry's/straw Berry's and ice cream....Yummm-eeeey.

Image

Back down at the beach now and about to ride this great new road..This is the shallow inlet at Inverloch.

Image

It must be a good road for bikes if you get signs like this.

Image

The road follows the coast.

Image

Check it out.....good road or what!

Image

There's plenty of nice lookout spots with great views.

Image

Someone should tell this 50yr old (almost) to act his age.

Image

Shame about the overcast weather...What a beautiful coast line.

Image

Image

Image

Image

This is looking back towards Inverloch in the far distance.

Image

The road was as smooth as a baby's bottom...and nice and twisty.

Image

Image

More beautiful beaches.

Image

Image

Image

Look a person.....This is the best that my zoom would do.

Image

There's plenty of spots along the way to stop and relax and look at the views.

Image

I have now reached the end of the mini GOR.....This is the beach at Cape Patterson.

Image

Image

Image

My 8 day ride to Sydney and back last month has squared off my old tires..I'm up to 16,000 klms on these Perelli's..The new Michelin PR 2's are going on next.

Image

Look at the sign guys...This is 'your' beach...why don't you come on over and use it....Those new mirrors do look cool don't they.

Image

Oooh wow...look...a little bit of blue sky.

Image

Back on the road home now..There are koala's and roo's everywhere..all over the road..and I have to keep swerving to miss them... (just kidding)

Image

The last time I took a pic here at this bridge near Phillip Island I was on the K1200R loaner.

Image

One last pic stop....yes it's the giant worm again....Well I had to go right past it on my way home......Cheers....Sorry about there being so many pics.

DJ

I Love your pictures and stories. I am happy there were so many of them. I went for a ride a week ago determined to get pics to post...I wound up with only 5 or 6. I get caught up in the riding and forgo the stopping to snap some shots. I have noticed that the downunder has big sheep (prievious post of yours) and big golden pheasants.

As for Acting your age...please don't. I will be 50 in December and you are my role model!

Great DJ and Thanks.

Don't apologize for all the pics. They make the report even greater.

Didn't the two Mikes see The Stump last year on their trip to Boise? Seems I remember seeing a picture like that. Oh yes. Here it is -from one of their ride reports. Guess I was wrong........ but it kind of looks the same

Cheers Dj, great to see somewhere new again. That's a monster stump!! You had me worried for a minute, the food stop was a longway in and I thought you were gonna pass out before you got there! :D
Your comment about Christmas summer holidays made me think...it really is upside down down under!
AND as for acting your age, well how old do ya feel!!? I'm eternally 26 in here!

Job well done AGAIN DJ! I really must stop and take some pics. Maybe this week, since I know I'll be on the bike with no particular destination in mind. Stay on the coast - It's been damn cold up in the hills around Jindabyne, Thredbo and Nimmitabel the last couple of weekends.

Thanks guys..(that means you to GypsyRR) and Mick..I look forward to some pics from your neck of the woods...btw GypsyRR...I first thought they were cows..but then I didn't see and udders (without looking too close)..so..I thought maybe they're males...but after thinking about it..Don't they put bulls in a paddock all by them selves...If they did put them together you could say "That's a lot of bull".. :D

Here another pic.....They all came over to check out my bike.

DJ

pssst........They do this 'thing' to baby bulls that make them Steers. It could be that they are neither cows not bulls.

Poor guys their destiny is the dinner plate! :?

Those can't be bulls. They are getting way to close together. Guys don't do that. Unless.....'Just Beeming' is correct...

Then they're eunichs. Great pics DJ. I too don't know how you manage to think about stopping for photos. But thanks for that.

Did Paul Bunyan come over there and cut down that tree?
Oh, and now I know where that song came from...You know, the one we all sing around the campfire..."Gumbuya my Lord, Gumbuya!"
